Pecking is one of the most important forms of communication for chickens. Watch them. They peck to discipline each other, as well as point to food they just found. It's a lot like our hands are to us in communicating, aiding language. And chickens have that, too, in spades. They actually have specific phrases for specific things and circumstances. If you listen, you can learn it! When you're holding your chicken and she relaxes, coo softly to her, "Chook, chook, chook." Listen carefully, she'll answer you. It means, "I'm good, you're good, and all's right with the world." I haven't heard mine do this to each other, just me. I think it's a phrase meant only for their closest humans.
As withholding the affection in order to discipline, it doesn't work that way with chickens. Giving Chicken Little all the attention she demands will make her mellow out and trust you.
