Dominique Thread!

Hi Jim,

Do you have recommendations for good sources of quality Dominique stock? I'm seeing a few names pop up repeatedly in my readings, so that's good. Just today I sent in dues to join the Dominique Club, hopefully I can learn some things through them. Thanks for your encouragement!

NH = New Hampshire. NYREDS should have good birds as bred to SOP guidelines. Another fellow by name of Gurney Davis of Trinity, NC would be a good source for production bred birds. Certainly other sources are out your way. Finding birds that are derived from Voter or Hyman strains would also be good. Mike Stichler also has good (although course in my opinion) birds that may be similar to the breeding of NYREDS strain.

So glad that I found this thread!! Mu hubby & I just received our first set of Dom eggs to hatch. We set them around midnight the night before last so today is day 2 of incubation!! I AM SSSSOOOO excited about not only our 1st hatch, but hopefully get our first set of Doms when

I'm still reading! Whew, it takes a long time to go through a thread with 100+ pages. But I am learning a lot from you folks, thanks so much. I have a request. This is a pic of my one Dominique, she's 7 months old here. She's just a hatchery bird, she came from My Pet Chicken and I have no idea what the origin of their stock is. But I'm trying to get better at 'seeing' the type expected of Doms by the SOP by looking at lots of photos of them. Can you tell me what's good and what's bad about this bird? It'd help me to apply what I am learning to a live bird if I go out and inspect her more closely. As far as I can tell from what I've learned so far, she has a pretty good comb but her butt is a disaster, haha. Pinched tail, hugely fluffy butt. It's not the best pose in the photo (it was a cold morning so she's well-puffed and she was mid-step), I've noticed that in general she seems to hold her tail at a good angle and the angle of her back isn't too bad. But that tail is so short and pinched. Am I seeing things right? I can try to take better pictures, if that helps. One step at a time I am learning more about these birds.

I love county and state fairs, so next year I am definitely going to be paying attention to the local poultry shows and see if there are any good Doms to look at!

So just for the heck of it I decided to candle my Dom eggs to see if I could find anything &&& guess what?!?!?!

Out of my 18 eggs 5 have definite veins & growth, 2 have veins & growth but are still questionable (1 has a crack from my oldest trying to turn them before telling me & the other's growth is just slightly smaller than the previous 5), 2 more are questionable about starting growth, & ending with only 9 that I know are completely clear still! YAY!!! I think that is pretty good for shipped eggs & my first try at incubating...

Now fingers crossed that I didn't just jynx myself by sharing the news but I am too excited to hold it it!
