mr.hutch23 :
I'm considering getting some Dominiques. This is my first foray into chickens and I have some questions about the breed.
1. How cold hardy are Dominiques? We live in northern Vermont and while I intend to build a tight coop, I don't intend to heat it. We spent double digit days below zero last winter.
2. How do they rank on the friendly scale? I have a two year old boy that I hope will spend some time "helping" with and learning about the flock.
3. How much space do Dominiques need to take advantage of their foraging ability? I have an acre fenced in, but I'm concerned about my dogs killing/chasing my birds so I was going to build them(poultry) a decent sized run.
Thanks for your time.
Hi and
I think for your area, Dominiques will be a great choice. I agree with Flower, in that I prefer rose comb birds. Less chance of frost bite in the winter... As far ans friendliness, it can vary greatly, from strain to strain, to bird to bird. But we have had some very sweet pullets, and roos for that matter. There are the occasionaly flighty ones here and there...
They love to forage, but one of the things I keep reading about them is that they bear confinement well. So I think you'llbe fine with a decent sized run. Our dogs have killed a few chickens, and it can be heartbreaking...
Anyway, good luck to you!
