Dominique Thread!

Are you a member of the Dominique Club of America yet? We publish a breeder's directory and very informative newsletters. I would not suggest going through a hatchery for Dominiques, some have decent lines (they drop ship from good breeders, usually) others have very poor representatives of the breed. And not all breeders have good stock either I have seen eggs advertised on here and on ebay where the parent stock looked terrible.

So, what lines do you think are best?

You are asking for an opinion where opinions differ strongly. To form your own opinion which is better for interest of breed and more informative to you with respect to your situation, I suggest you get more than one strain / line and compare them yourself. A strain that does well in a hot dry climate may not be best for a cool to cold with lots of rain / snow climate.

Honestly, there is no "best", they all have their respective strengths and weakness. Join the DCA (it's inexpensive, and a great deal) and search for pictures of Dominiques. when you see something you like, email or call the breeder and ask about their birds.

soooo pretty (I say with the whites of my eyes turning green)

I'll be waiting until next spring to start my dom pullets. The 3 dom pullets I got this year are all crowing and destined for freezer camp. I think this is an awesome breed and can't wait to get some females! I love their behavior, and from what I've seen, the roosters are much better behaved than the other 2 breeds that I've sent to freezer camp. (BSL, RIR).

I have one Dominique hen, her name is Aries :)

Do Dom's generally go through a summer molt? Phineas (my one-eyes dominique) went through a partial molt in the fall, and lately she's been loosing a lot of feathers...it does seem to be working it's way from her head to the tail...and all things would point to a partial molt, but since she just went through a partial molt in fall, and none of the other birds (all different, non-dom breeds) are losing feathers...I just want to see if it's something I should be concerned about. I see little (and big - wing/tail) barred feathers all over the yard :/
