Happy Labor Day!!! No one is posting so I thought I would. I'm enjoying all the SOP conversations it's really interesting. I enclosed a photo if my 1st Dominique, Loretta, who made us fall in love with the breed. Last photo is a Dom pullet who seems to have the smallest head we've ever seen and she's tiny. But she was my only pure Dom to hatch out of a shipped quantity of 12 from a backyard breeder. The rooster next to her is a SFH / Dom cross who seems to have a great personality and a soft crow, but I don't think we're interested in keeping any mutts for now. Hoping someday to find a roo with a great personality who would work in our urban backyard setting. (Of course I'm VERY picky about this.). But for now, hoping our 2nd girl is as smart, sweet, and friendly as the first.

Here's Loretta again. She does have a nice U in her back, just the way she's standing on this rock you can't tell, but you can see in the far away photo. Anything stand out that should be excluded for breeding?

Not sure what you are asking???

If you have just the two girls, then you will be using them both..... Just hatch out a bunch of chicks, and keep the best from the bunch. :D

Sorry. I'm not sure if she's any good to start to breed. I'm breeding Ameraucanas right now and might stick with that. I'm just wondering if I should get better stock to breed from to start out with Doms, since they are our favorite, but I'm realizing that a lot of them aren't true to type, so want to see if I have a keeper for breeding. I start with trios. We are backyard breeders.

Breeding is expensive by many measures. Time is major. if you are into it, then look carefully at what you have. Right done how it compares to the ideal of the Standard of Perfection for American Dominiques. Then find more birds that are strong where yours are weak. Then begin your breeding program. You will embark on a major learning curve. Once you get the next generation of young adults, then show us them so we can help you evaluate.

Remember the cost.

The more I look at my flock the more I wonder if one of my dom cockerels is a bantam. He's noticably smaller than the other two (the other two being very similar in size), however I know that this could be due to genetics. I got them from a breeder who has both standard and bantam dominiques. Here are a few pics, they aren't great since the birds were free ranging when I took them, but the cockerel in question is on the left in every pic except for the last two:

He's on the right in these last two:

Is he looking like a bantam?

Is he younger than the others?

Sometimes chicks are just shrimpy, even from good stock... I am not sure why.

If he really is the same age as the rest of your flock, I wouldn't use him as breeding.
