Dominique Thread!

Look where Bubbles decided to roost tonight! At 1st I didn't see her in the coop & thought she was missing. I guess she decided to spend the night high up in the enclosed run to enjoy the cool summer breeze..
Lol she actually LOOKS sleepy. Bless her heart

For the love of Chicken(heavens open chicken choir clicks in unison)Humans paying attention&is describing us correctly ahhhhhhhhhhh.(that's my chicken version of a heavenly choir lol)

All Dominiques have rose combs.

All barred rocks have straight combs. Male or female.

Sex - links may be either as they are a cross of two breeds.

So I have a question. I got Dominique hatching eggs, from a farm that only has Dominiques. 6LF and 6Bantam. One LF and one bantam (so two of the 12 eggs) hatched with straight combs. Does this mean that:
a) somewhere in the lineage of the farm I got the eggs from, that there is barred rock and I just happened to get the barred rock genes?
b) or, the straight-combed chicks are still dominiques, but with some sort of recessive, straight-comb gene?

The other 10 chicks that hatched all had have rose combs.

Thanks!

The straight comb are not dominiques. Part of what makes it a dominique is the rose comb.
Sorry if it disappoints, still great chickens you just need a seperate penn if you are breeding OR dont market them as doms as thats dishonest. Sorry if someone didnt know what they where doing selling you barred rocks as doms. Thats why you dont just ride around buying fresh eggs(farmers are selling to eat AS EGGS and be sneaky and hatch them

few dishonest people tried to buy eggs from me and then hatch them secretly&dishonest baha and all they got are pets nothing they can market ...serves them right for their trickery and greed.) if you want hatching eggs buy hatching eggs of a breeds standard if you want mixes then take a cheap price and get mixes. If i sound like a snob sorry but i have paided my dues and learned the hard and honest way. Sick&tired of being honest then being taken advantage of. If you want to sell eggs from a pure breed pen rake the blooms off before you sell them...lowers hatch rate by 75% and if a chicken hatches good luck poor thing will probably have 3eyes and 8toes. Thats why i only buy hatching eggs from honest sellers who know my FULLEST intentions. Its an old farm respect code.

Single combs can hide in a flock of pure Dominiques. It does happen.

If it happens very infrequently, usually a breeder (even a most excellent and reputable one) will ignore the issue, try to guess who the carriers are, and move on.

To guarantee that no dominique hen is hiding the recessive single comb gene (technically, it is not a gene for single comb, it is a blank, and the hen is heterozygous instead of homozygous for rose comb), is a bit of a pain. You would need to take all of the hens, pen them up with a single comb rooster for at least 4 weeks, 6 much better. Then you would have to trap nest all hens individually, mark their eggs, and hatch at least 4, 10 chicks would be better, per hen. If all 10 chicks were rose comb, there is a very good chance that the hen is homozygous for rose comb (which is what you want). Then, after figuring out what you are going to do with 60 crossbred chicks you never wanted in the first place, you have to wait about 6 weeks before you can use those hens to produce pure Dominiques.

It is much easier, if you see a single comb pop up, to just get rid of the rooster you were using (since you now know he is heterozygous for rose comb, which is bad), and pick a different rooster. If you focus on a most excellent rose comb, there is a better chance that the rooster you choose will be homozygous for rose comb.

With all of that said.... Some breeders like a rooster that is heterozygous for rose comb, since that can indicate better fertility.

I would love to say I totally know what gender they are but there aren't enough of them for me to say ok those are 'dark' or that's a clean spot and so on. I would love some opinions on what gender you think they are. I'm hoping for at least one boy and the ideal would be two boys and a girl so I had 2 to choose from but could still keep all 3 ;) I think the third one looks the most like a girl? What do you think?
Also I know that there's a gender section but this is breed specific and I feel like you're the group to ask! Thanks!
