Dominique Thread!

Pics
Also, does anyone have a good quality photo of a Dominique with good/correct type. What needs improvement as far as type, I assume the Barred Rock comment means they look to large?

As I said the pullet in my avatar has good type. I can't seem to figure out how to enlarge the picture & the system won't let me resubmit it.
The Barred Rock comment was about type not size. I have no way of determinibg size from a photo.
I thought I was pretty specific abot type but I'll restate. They're long & flat in the back & they carry their tails too low. That's what makes them look like Rocks.

So, more for fun than anything, I'd like to see if anyone's comments on these birds match up to the comments we have made. Please keep in mind that we had a perfect little posing station set up and a whole one hen decided to stay on there. The rest of the pics are the birds marching around the greenhouse (a winter storage area for the rabbits and some of their equipment)... Also, you can tell a few of the hens were shot at night, so their crops were very full and they were tired, more interested in laying down than in perking up and getting pictures.

I won't post what we have noted until others have made a few comments

we don't want to spoil the surprise as to who belongs in the layer pen, who gets to stay as a breeder and who gets made into chicken soup. Also, we took measurements on all the pullets (two fingers, three fingers, etc.) so try to take a stab at that as well, and weight on all the birds. These birds are varying in age from late February 2010 to early August 2010.

Birds I acquired from Privett look like some of those in your photographs. Many from the western U.S. look as such to my eye. May be beginnings of landrace development within doms.

Forgive me if I'm being silly, but what do you mean by Landrace development? It's always amazing how much different the birds look in real life than they do in the photos too

Post comments!!! We just want to see if what we're thinking of these birds matches up to anyone else here on the boards!

>> also, some of these birds are from Washington, some from Georgia and some from Missouri or Michigan... can't remember, it's in my records. So all but the Washington birds aren't west coasters.

Your birds look dark. A couple with closups of combs have very red coloration and the posterior point recessed into a dimple. My Privetts have a high frequency for both those characteristics.

If you selectively breed your birds in anyway for appearance, then it is very unlikely you are selecting for the exact appearance that someone else from a different region is doing. Your local environment may also be imposing selective pressure as well. This not a bad thing, actually good and indicative of genetic variation.
