Dominique Thread!

Here's a better shot of his comb. He's so curious about everything and is always on the move so it's difficult to get clear close ups but I caught him at the waterer. It's not as cavernous as the first image made it look.

I too like smaller headgear. Maine winters have nothing on Alaska's but none of my rose or pea comb girls have ever experienced frostbite (the singles have) and I want to try to keep it that way with all my birds. Plus I just really love the rose. I love the small walnut/pea/rosecombs too!

I had a choice between two cockerels. I chose Ichabod because he's a little calmer than the other but also because both my hens have very small combs (smaller than I see on other girls). I wanted to get something in between. A friend of mine took the other cockerel who has a very small comb but with a very prominent point. We have agreed that I can use her boy as well. I would have kept them both if I were equipped to keep 2 roosters. The one with my friend stands much more erect. I can't tell if thats his natural stance or if he's just always on alert. Her girls aren't as warm to him as mine are to Ichabod. I had to chuckle when I read what you named your cockerel ~ we had a friendly pullet we named "Ilse" until we realized it was a cockerel and renamed him "Ichabod". Here is our sweet Breda cockerel "Ichabod" which we had to rehome with friends and he's so friendly they made him their indoor/outdoor family pet:

Ichabod's comb does have a hollow but it's not quite as deep as it looks in that second photo. The shadow accentuates it a a bit and I have noticed it is still developing. Hopefully some of that hollow will fill out. His wattles are a little lopsided but I'm noticing they too are evening out a bit. I will take sweetness in a Dominique first because all the perfection of a Dominique physique is null and void without the sweetness gene! I believe the name "Ichabod" carries the "sweetness" gene

I'm not familiar with Bredas but that's a handsome boy.

My children and I decided to name him after the 1820s character Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow because his personality reminds us so much of the character right down to the way all the hens took to him and look after him. I have a thread of his story if you'd like to read it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1126404/integrating-a-cockerel-into-a-flock-of-mature-hens

I only have three Dominiques and though all three are new to me as of this summer, they're the friendliest of my flock and I have a VERY friendly group here.

I read your Ichabod story. Very sweet! Like I said previously, there is a sweetness gene in the name "Ichabod" ~ our Ichabod's new owners call him "Icky" for short but truly LUV him! Breda's are a relatively new breed in the U.S. which Greenfire Farms introduced. Bredas are a Dutch breed that at one time in the U.S.A. were just as old a breed and as popular as the Dominiques and just as friendly, curious, people-friendly, and outgoing as Doms. But Bredas were then known as Guilderlands, Kraiikops, and several other names that never made it into the APA and were lost in obscurity. Greenfire Farms re-introduced the birds as "Breda" into the U.S. and I am so grateful they did. I have forever been trying to find a light-weight docile breed that layed well and got along with flockmates without the aggressiveness that most dual-purpose or egg-layer breeds display. I figured the Dominique were the only such gentle breed until we experimented with a Breda pullet.

The unfortunate thing about Breda is that their sex is not outwardly identifiable until they are about 4-months old because they have no combs to identify cockerels from pullets until the tell-tale hackle feathers start growing in on the males at around 4-months. That's why someone mistakenly shipped us a cockerel by mistake ~ our "Ichabod" which we re-homed to a very lovely family! Bredas do not have combs but a little triangular crest mounted on top where a comb should be. Their nostrils are very large and cavernous without a comb above their beak. Both sexes have wattles but no combs, they have vulture hocks, feathered legs and feet. The cocks reach 6 lbs and hens around 4 lbs. Very docile active busy foragers that eagerly jump for the next handout. Don't bend over a Breda or their tall jumps will hit your nose! The gentlest, sweetest, docile, light-weight breed we've ever had which I equate to the sweet Doms. The Breda is like a Dom in every way except that Breda will not raise their own young ~ they are not a broody breed and boy do they crank out the eggs. Our pullet started laying bright white eggs November last year and August this year is still cranking out 4 to 5 eggs weekly in this horrible hot summer weather! We are so impressed with the personality and production of our Blue Breda that we have another on order for Fall. If it wasn't so hot for USPS shipping we'd already have her but the breeder is waiting for cooler temps before shipping our Cuckoo Breda to us. They come in BBS (Blue/Black/Splash), Cuckoo, Black-&-White Mottled and Blue-&-White Mottled.

OUR BREDA AS A PULLET WAS IN-HOUSE DURING QUARANTINE AND WOULD SIT NEXT TO ME FOR CUDDLING AND PETTING ~ BREDA LOVE ATTENTION

OUR BREDA GIRL IS A REAL "HAM" AND LOVES THE CAMERA!

OUR BREDA GIRL AS A PULLET LOVED THE MIRROR

BREDA FOOT FEATHERS ARE LOVELY BUT WEAR DOWN DURING FORAGING OUTDOORS

THIS IS THE 4-MONTH BREDA COCKEREL "ICHCABOD" THAT WAS SENT TO US BY MISTAKE. SO CURIOUS WE HAD TO BACK UP TO TAKE HIS PHOTO! JUST TOO-TOO FRIENDLY AND UNAFRAID!!!
