Come on!! Don't just rip the bandaid off.. Do it slowly like I did..Imply or hint they might be roosters..Then in a few days hint harder..

Sorry @ChickenFajita6 I was going to slowly get to that point....

My kids still aren't onboard with the idea. My son (who is very attached - to and named Margaret) still pulls up photos like this online and says "but they have bright red wattles and combs!" Guess we will wait for a crow or an egg.

Perhaps you can change the name to Mark.

This was my Bubbles 2 yrs ago at about the same age.
She didn't have much comb & wattle development until she was about to start laying.

If you can't wait another season for some Urch Doms, Cackle Hatchery had Mark A Fields help them improve their bantam and large fowl Doms and might be the best hatchery to order some Doms to start. I hear good and not so good with hatchery birds but how well the hatcheries really keep up with breeding only the best of the best (I doubt they have that kind of time or space). However, at this time Cackle would be my first hatchery choice for Doms. Meanwhile, I've heard that Sandhill is good about preserving rare breeds and ships them out whatever they hatch and don't really have the time to breed selectively. I spoke with them before and they are nice to respond to emails but if you are looking for quality birds you would have to breed from their stock repeatedly to eventually get birds to your standard which I have neither space or time to do. I've also spoken to Tracy Rodenbach in TN who is a Dom club member and raised them when I spoke with her. She might be able to refer you or maybe some other active member in the Dom club if you can get them to answer you (takes patience to wait for a reply but they are serious about their Dom breeding).

The doms we got are from cackle. Got em thru our FFA program. Extremely happy with them. Extremely friendly and getting 3-4 eggs a day from the 4 hens. The rooster has been great so far. Hasn't shown an aggressive bone in his body and is always on guard for his ladies. Good lookin bird as well.

I'm new to chickens but very pleased with these up to this point.

Great to hear that they are doing so well for you.

:D.

Fantastic photo.

Great looking flock. Tell us how well they free range.

I never let my chickens out...I have so many predators the mind boggles.
Thank you. T

Thank you! They are truly beautiful. My flock is able to free range almost daily but only at select times when we are able to supervise. We do have foxes in the area and they watch our routine very carefully looking for any opportunity to snatch one up! Usually my rule of thumb is if the kids are out playing and I'm out, there then the flocks can come out. :)
