Dominique Thread!

Jungle, she might have just quit laying, but I would do a very through search around (look under and behind things, etc) as my guess is she's just hiding eggs from you.
As a breed, I've found Dominiques to be quite intelligent, it's part of what's kept me interested in them all these years.

I am glad to hear that they are intelligent. I am only looking for breed that have a high I.Q. and strong survival instincts. The Dominique is purportedly the bird the early colonist had, and if that is true, then they should have what I am looking for and it it is this that drew me to this breed.

I looked around and found one egg the size of an olive. First one she has laid this size. I thought only old birds laid tiny eggs.

My husband wanted to add Heritage Breed barred chickens to our flock and he decided on Dominiques. So now we have added 2 Dominique chicks to our flock! Here are some pictures of the little devils. They have been brooded by one of our hens who as fate would have it, hatched her chicks the same day we got our Dominiques. We just snuck them underneath her and she immediately accepted them. I can't wait until they feather out and we get to see their beautiful coloring. (The other chick with the light barring is a cuckoo maran).

Beautiful chicks

Before my hen decided to break all her eggs by laying them while on the rooster, she laid three eggs randomly on the ground that I saved and incubated. This morning two of them hatched! YAY!

I live in WV. I used a mail order hatchery out of Ohio www.healthychicksandmore.com, I'm just not sure if they had any Dominique chicks?

Travis, I don't know about anyone in West Virginia, but there are several members of the Dominique Club of America n Virginia and Ohio. Contact Suzette Ellington, the club secretary and see if she can't help you get in touch with someone in your area. [email protected]

How old can eggs be and still get a good hatch rate? I dont have a lot of birds but would like to have enough eggs to fill the incubator. What is the best way to store eggs before incubating? I was thinking cool dark place like a basement?
