Yesterday morning I let each of the breeding pens out into the chicken "courtyard" in turn to do a little foraging. It was windy, but I took some photos.

Heh, you're a week ahead of me, my first hatch is due March 1st. It doesn't look even remotely like spring here, with 2 ft of snow on everything and more due tomorrow, but fresh peeper-cheepers will make it feel like spring.

Love this fenced yard! It's exactly how I have mine planned to build. You probably get the same wind that we get so I'm wondering... does the short fence with spaces slow the wind a bit without giving the wind something to really push on? How long have you had that fence up?

Phase one has been nearly three years, phase two just about 2 years, and we are now starting on phase 3. It slows the wind, but doesn't stop it. To stop the wind would be asking for issues here, it is common to get 60MPH + at our place, which is one of the reasons for our farms name..... The short fence is inside the "courtyard" which itself has a 6 ft wood fence. When I get the whole thing finished in a couple of months I will post photos, probably in the coops section. Here is a drawing that shows the setup including phase 3.

Phase one has been nearly three years, phase two just about 2 years, and we are now starting on phase 3. It slows the wind, but doesn't stop it. To stop the wind would be asking for issues here, it is common to get 60MPH + at our place, which is one of the reasons for our farms name..... The short fence is inside the "courtyard" which itself has a 6 ft wood fence. When I get the whole thing finished in a couple of months I will post photos, probably in the coops section. Yeah, I understand about that wind. I don't know if we typically get 60 mph winds but I'd say 40 at least, and thankfully, not every day. I thought about making my perimeter fencing 4' with a wire topper up to 6'... only because I'm short and I want to be able to see over the fence easily. I would use the 24" sections for something else. Either that or I'd make it 5' but I don't know yet what I would do with the 12" sections left over. It's easier to find a use for 24" pieces. Probably a raised coop so they can get underneath for shade as I don't have any here and then use the 24" pieces as fencing around the bottom of the coop. Thank you for sharing your plan with me. I like it. Is phase 3 the 3,312 sq. ft area? Yep, I like it. I need to try and get going on my yards this year. I have to replace the roof of my barn first and foremost though. Then I can get going on the other stuff.

Other way around. phase 1 was the large house and run with the growout pens. Phase two was the work and storage shed and the brooding pens. Phase three includes the three other pens. These will be used for Breeding and Cockerel housing.

My Dominiques just started laying a few weeks ago. They acted like ladies with a severe case of PMS the few weeks prior, pecking me and such. They now since laying are the sweetest chickens I have. And they lay the most beautiful brown eggs. They are also my quietest chickens which is key as my city isn't keen on byc's!
