Dominique Thread!

I just went to a show today with a single American Dominique cockerel hatched early last October. I got spanked. To be consistently competitive chicks are going to have to be hatched in January which does not jive with rearing system used to produce free-range reared juveniles. Breeding as I do most young of year are not filled out by fall and same birds are already in old feathers by time of the spring showing season. A winter show season would be so much better. The harsh winter of 2013-2014 with frost bite did not help either. This year I will be trying to set up some flypens in which to isolate show prospects from wind but keeping birds above freezing will be well beyond my pocket book.

I will be at Gilmanor bright and early.   Are you looking for something in particular?.

I am looking at picking up a couple poulets to run w/ my current flock as I consider going in on Dominiques whole hog.

I am debating the pros/cons of running to seperate breeds as I currently am focused on Swedish flower Hens and have never managed multiple breeds together.

Just wanted to introduce myself. My husband and I live in PA. We got our first four hens from a local person. They are Dominiques and we love them. We hope to breed them and make a whole flock of Dominiques down the road. We just joined the Dominique group and hope to win the incubator LOL!

Here is our a close up of one of our girls the day they came home:

We can't wait to learn more from you all.

Good pic and Welcome to the forum. From Southeast Texas. All Dominiques in my flock.

Happy Easter!

Turnip Truck:

I have ten Dominique chicks from Duane Urch (pictures on this forum). I think three of them are cockerels based on comb development and feather color (lighter than the girls due to the effect of double barring gene). With that ratio I can't sell just pullets, but I could part with what I believe would be a pair or perhaps a trio. Our flock is also NPIP-AI Clean so they can cross state lines. I'm not planning to bring these youngsters to Gilmanor so you would have to let me know if you are definitely interested. They are outside all day and only come in when temps drop below 55 or it is raining -- no more heat lamp required. We also feed medicated chick feed until 12 weeks of age if that is a factor for you.

We also have SFH and they are fine with other breeds. In the pen with our Houdans, the Doms are the more submissive breed. They're also calmer, but that's not saying much when compared to a Houdan! :D

We finally got our shipment of 23 Dominique! Now we just have to figure out which are cockerels.

Opps it posted on the top...this is the main setup. Two 9' by 12' breeding coops with movable dividers and an 18' by 24' layer coop on the left end. Still need to finish up the runs off the back.

Here is the grow out coop 8' by 8' with a 200 square foot run. Left the run side unfinished incase we needed to add on, and with the 11 surprise NH's, we need, so another 8' going on the run side. We screwed everything together, so will be easy to move the run down a bit and add on. Plus this is about 25 feet off my porch, so the babies, young uns can be close by. Oh, those are the one yr old hatchery birds free ranging this spring. Getting my NPIP testing done first of 2015, as they get a grant and it's free from Jan. to March here. Wanted all birds here and all buildings done, before I had them come all the way up here.
Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself.

I started with the Dominique's this spring. I got 6, 3 pullets, 3 cockerels from vnsseed here on BYC. 4 weeks old.

Love them. They are darlings and full of it. Great personalities also. Going to breed them next year, vnsseed has another line I can tap also when I need to.

Yeah, this winter was a very hard winter for us up here in far northern NH.

I also have GSBR's and GSNH's in a brooder that are 2 weeks now. Some of the NH's are that German cross and some straight GS lines. The GSBR's are the ringlet line and straight GS XW Poultry from Jwhip. Another BYC member. The NH's were a surprise in with my BR's, so need to do some adding on to the grow out coop. Other than that, they rest is all built and ready for the new birds! Layer coop, breeding pens, ect. Still some tweaking to do though. Only big thing left is running water to the main building. Ran out of time with winter hitting so early. Have the electric in to all buildings.

I also have 15 one year old hatchery BR's. They are my "test" birds basically and eggs to keep us self sustaining. Thought I should start with cheap birds to make sure I still had it

Been a while, but finding I still love it all! The plan is to faze out the hatchery birds, and go all Standard breeds again.

I have two 4' by 4' brooders in my living room right now and watching chicken TV. About to go start chores. Loving this. Been a bit, so just getting back into chickens.

Just love these Dom's. All but those hatchery yr olds are Standard Breeds.

Setups posted above for some reason? Not so great with computers.
