Dominique Thread!

One of my Dom pullets flew the fence this morning. She was quite distressed as we've been having some heavy earth work and tree removal for the last week. I went out, expecting to have to give her a merry old chase, but she ran up to me, squatted down and stamped her feet... frozen in place until I picked her up. GOTTA LUV IT! Unfortunately, I have 4 layers, 16 more gals coming into lay (3 that I know of are laying so far) and only 2 nest boxes that have received the stamp of approval. My other box offerings have been totally snubbed. Today, I tried a cardboard box with a nice circular opening... several shoppers, no takers. Other trials have been a big dish pan, and a square plastic kitty litter bucket... still no takers. Fussy gals!

Cardboard is snubbed by hens. My DH tried to set up a big cardboard box in the yard and they didn't come near it. However, a large plastic covered doghouse is frequented by our hens. They once used it to dive into when they sounded a Cooper's Hawk alarm. Since then I've added an even larger recycled doghouse for them. During heatwaves they don't often stay long inside the doghouses but during cooler temps they sometimes take mid-day snoozes in them. I keep straw in them to make cleaning out poops easier.

For nests inside the indoor 4x4 pen we placed a couple Kidz Homz (Walmart online) storage boxes that have lids and one open side wall and the hens love them to sleep in or lay their eggs as long as there's straw in them. Hens love seclusion so open nestboxes or plastic tubs aren't appealing. However a covered kitty litter pan with a round hole entrance is very appealing to them. Your plastic kitty litter bucket would probably have worked if it had a lid and a round hole entrance. Some owners who had very open nestboxes gave their hens more seclusion by putting up curtains over each nestbox. Sounds silly but it worked for them. I've seen all sorts of patterns and styles of curtains from little ruffles on the top front to fully parted drapes on each side of each nestbox. The idea is to offer seclusion.

My teeny-tiny adorable little girl came yesterday! I love her!! I received 4 black chicks, hard to tell 3 apart, but most people I've asked say this little girl is my Dominique:

Do you agree?

If she's bonded to you and likes to carry on chirping conversation with you as you speak to her and if she sticks around to explore your hair, your eyeglasses, your arm, your computer keyboard, etc. then she's probably a Dom. She's definitely a girl with those dark markings on her front legs and toes! Our little feed store Dom was from Privett Hatchery and they marked her with a blue dot on her white head spot and one on her belly to identify her from the BRs who look identical but are larger chicks. Is she soft? Dom chicks are incredibly soft and their juvenile feathers at around 3 weeks old start coming in barred on their little stubby wings - beautiful silver and gray barring pattern and very soft. She was so adorable it was all I could do from smothering her like a mother hen - had to let her grow up to explore and take dust baths in my hair net, napkins, dish cloth or whatever was lying around on the desk - LOL.

If she is affectionate and curious, and wants to spend time with you, she's probably a Dom. Any Barred Rocks shipped will be noticeably larger.

Hens do love seclusion - and *dark* nesting conditions.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I ordered my baby from Meyer, according to them she hatched just fine today & should be here tomorrow. So excited! Has anyone here had any experiences with Dominiques from Meyer?
I have - And they are smart, active, curious and affectionate :) I have two from them now, and one's slightly darker than the other, but both are super sweet! :)
