Dominique Thread!

Although there are individuals who turn out bad like in any breed of animal, I definitely would not say aggressiveness in males is a breed trait for the Dominique. Because most breeders do want to show their birds they would not want a mean bird nor would a mean rooster be a good breeder as he would terrorize the hens. I would give him a little longer to sort out hormones, maybe even handling him more might help tone him down. My extra nice older rooster gets cocky with my son who is 8 and likes to tease him, but I can walk right up to him, pick him up, handle him, trim spurs, give baths, put him on a tiny kitchen scale for weighing, etc. without a single flap out of him. I do not handle them unless necessary, so they must be "pret a porte" whenever something needs done. My youngest boy "Wyatt" likes to jump up to see what's in my pocket if I lean over.

On Marans, mine were from Melanie Nealeigh in Greenville OH. She occasionally sells in the warmer months on craigslist. She is always winning BOS at the county fair. Her stock I believe is from Wade Jean lines, but that is all I know. I have been at her place a few times, and she is always carrying around one of her big ole Marans roosters and he just lays there in her arm like a lapdog. Our pet hen lets my 4 year old carry her around.

I would like someone to correct me if I'm wrong, but how isn't the Dominique rooster naturally aggressive if they made a gamefowl version of it? For those of you know that don't know, there is a gamefowl called the Dominique game fowl or "bullik." Is that true? or are these two breeds unrelated and the gamefowl only has that name because it kinda-sorta looks like a dom?

My Dominique hen gets along with my Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpington, Golden Compine and Rhode island reds. She is not on bottom of their order and i do wish for more Dominiques!
Hey MeeMa, tell me about your gold campines

Someone else can go i to mire detail, butvthe short answer is that they are unrelated. The dominique game fowl preceeds the dominique actually.

The cuckoo pattern of American Dominiques and the Dom lineage of American Gamefowl has been around a lot longer than either current breed. It could have existed the few thousand years ago when the ancestors of what where English Games (bankovid games) split from what we now know as the Aseel. The latter can carry the trait as well. The aggression business directed at humans is independent of the game attribute developed in gamefowl. The latter point has been continuously confused by parties not familiar with games for a long time. Crossing and American Dominque with an American Game does not make for roosters that attack people. I have done so repeatedly and even made more than 3/4 game with no issues with aggression towards humans.https://www.backyardchickens.com/styles/byc-smilies/wink.png

Here's a question I've been wondering about for the past couple of days: When does a dom rooster's comb fully grow out? And, is it possible for him to not have the spike at the top?

@centrarchid Hey what's the most dangerous animal(s) any of your gamefowl have fought off? I was rummaging through BYC and somehow found this post below that I found shocking:

"Well the best in my book, is the gamecock, most are not mean. Have see a gamecock stand and fight a cooper hawk, saw one of dads fight a wild pheasant rooster.
Thing about gamecocks they will fight until the death, they cant always win ,but will try their best.
Had a gamecock and gamehens in a run, came home found two of the hens dead gamecock missing feathers and 4 gamehens walking around. There in the corner hiding a 50lb stray dog."

Taking on a dog that knows it stuff would be suicide. A pup can be beaten as can a young fox. Mine can take on Coopers Hawks and consistently when by bluffing alone. They have defeated Red-tailed Hawks but hawk must be on ground. Cats generally easy.

Rooster generally best at running a distraction with attacks coming at predator from behind. It is nothing like a fight between males and duration almost always very short. Only exception is if a small raptor is for some reason grounded. He must be fully mature to do such and be in good feather. Mine do not seem to actually protect hens, rather the broods.
