They aren't huddled in the corner, cold. In fact they were all over at the other end when i opened the screen that was over the box, so they'd rushed over to see if i had anything. Then when i lowered the flap on the far side of the box, they all rushed over THERE...saw a couple of little specks on the flap and they all wanted to peck at the same time. I have other pics, but not as bright as when i lowered the flap, even caught one doing that 'zoom-fly' thing, where they sort of BOING into the pack.

I understand your point of view. You have good input for people to consider as an option but I think most who receive an off-schedule shipment won't have the heart to refuse chicks in need of attention as they would die during a return travel back to the hatchery. But you have good food for thought.

Most hatcheries do NOT want to see thier names on FB with problems like this and will have you keep the chicks if they have already been sent and will send 'fresh' ones at the correctly assigned times.

Oh, i hope not! (i think) My little shed is only 8 x 10. On the other hand, if they DO send out another batch, i would have more to choose from...

We have such nasty weather here, some winters, that they may be confined for weeks. We will probably start with just a SMALL run, and expand as $ permits.

If you can, roof the run. A roof on the run is truly excellent since it will keep snow out of the run.

As to cost... Build with trash, and then paint it nicely. The paint will make it look good.


I love building with trash, because free is nice.

Then I would use that ridged clear plastic as one wall of the run, or maybe as three run walls.

What's with the varying baby markings? Does the marking indicate anything about future barring, etc?

Today the chicks were introduced to a 'real' chick trough. You know, the red ones with a line of holes on each side. Maybe a little early on that, as one of the littler ones ended up inside, seeming to like it, too. She wanted back in. Chirped like crazy when i filled it so full that she couldn't.

First, markings can indicate male or female, I don't think they indicate anything else.
