Dominique Thread!

I ordered 15 cockerels for a crossbreeding project. Could not have been happier with the birds.

I cponized several but retained three for breeding stock. A fault to some, these birds from Cackle are over-sized from SOP stand point but otherwise, they are beautiful and the capons are turning out well...this was the first time I have caponized pure Dom. cockerels but will not be the last.

My Dom birds are just at 5 months of age and weigh nearly 7 pounds. They are fed FF and are not overly fat since they are free-ranged over several acres. I have serious hopes for this breed...both as pure breeds and as influence in my crosses for super-duper (not monster) capons.

Are the 7-lb birds the hens or the roos? 7-lbs sounds awfully heavy for a Dom hen -- but then, I've heard that some breeders were trying to increase the size of them. Personally, I prefer the hens at 5-lbs but if the Cackle Dom hens are reaching 7-lb I may re-think getting them. You gotta show us pics, maybe alongside a different breed for size comparison, if possible? I loved the Dom we had but she was nowhere near a heavy bird.

Sorry, these were all cockerels. I'll see what I can do about photos.

I only have the three intact cockerels left and the lesser of them will be slaughtered tomorrow and cooked one day next week. I gave the capons to my friends from West Virginia who were good enough to house-sit for me while I was on extended vacation.

I plan to take the chosen one to a smaller run to fast for two days before butchering and I will try to get the keepers photographed next to an 8.5 pound White Chantecler hen. (As if there were any other color of Chantecler).

Okay, the 7-pounders were Dom cockerels -- that makes much more sense! Yes, we'd love to see pics! I agree, as I'm sure most Canadians would agree, the only Chantecler is a White one LOL!

My birds just went out the door with brother to Indiana.

Cackle American Doms should not be more than 6 lbs on the hen side.

Yes; and even 6-lbs is large. I prefer them around 5 to 5.5-lb in my docile flock.

What birds went out the door with your brother? All of your current Doms? Your new recruitments are more Doms, right?

Job insecurity. Culling down to reduce feed bill. Brother now outfitted to keep at least as many as I can when not under financial stress. At least as many brother took got place at table as well. Missouri Dominique flock will be knocked back to a dozen birds next week. Games will be reduced to low 20's.
