I know what you mean. As long as I keep the protein level up, mine are quite the little"snowbirds" as well.

Sample size small but it is apparent that my two hatchery stocks lay not only more eggs, but also larger eggs. Three of my non-commercial hatchery lines are not repressented in sample but if memory serves correctly their eggs are smaller and of ligher color than the Privett and Cackle lines, despite the unrepressented line hens being decidely larger (by nearly a pound). There will me more coming as I get a bigger, more repressentative data set.

You are a scientist through and through. I love it!

Well, the standard states that the comb should be covered with small points. This would not be it. This the most extreme comb I've seen. This poor guy looks like a rock star!

We had a cockerel like that - one we ordered. All the birds from that order had pretty coarse (and poor) combs, but good type. He had an extreme comb like your guy. We named him Butch - short for Butch Cassidy (and the Sundance Kid - aka Sundance, whom we've kept).

How long ago did you get Dominiques from Cackle? I'm wondering if this might be a relatively new strain as I never got eggs anywhere near that dark from the pullets I got from them either crossed on another line or straight; they were all on the lighter side of your scale. (D to F) In fact, some of my eggs get described as "pink" by a certain family member.

edited to add: I should start looking backward through these threads more often instead of only reading the last page...
