Here is a great pic of one of our Dominique chicks. We ordered three pullets from Meyer.

Here they are with their silkie buddies:

They are now almost 3 weeks old. These are brave little chicks. They aren't afraid of our hands AT ALL! Out of the 24 chicks we've raised previously, these three Doms are the only ones who come right up to our hands and climb up, and we haven't even given them treats yet! It's amazing!

Here's a few photos of them now:

Startled by the flash of the camera, poor baby!

So far I've got one pullet that is noticeably bigger than the others, but that is probably just an effect of their hatchery stock (can't really tell here):

Somone tells me this ain't a Dominiquer:

I know he's more than 50% Dom, as you see the pattern, pea comb, & wattle...he's got golden hues on his neck & wing feathers, green in tail, & reddish/palish shanks...any clue as to what else he could be?

Looks like a dominique that might originally be from Privett hatchery. Tail and overall body type similar to barred rock, Dark colored (metallic green) tail feather pops up in many strains of dominique from time to time but very frequent in Privette strain. Otherwise I can not see enough to support recent hybrid origin of bird.

& Dangit! I get my combs messed up! He's sportin' a "rose" comb, not a "pea" comb...I guess the rose comb is a dominate trait of the Dominique breed?

To be a proper dominique, the comb is supposed to be of the rose type. Single comb allele still exist at low frequency in many dominique strains resulting in the relatively rare single comb bird. The single comb allele is recessive to the dominant rose comb allele.

One of my Dom hens has been so broody for weeks. I didn't want chicks from the mix that is in the pen so I've tried to discourage her. Last night I picked up the three Welsummer chicks that were shipped as day olds a few days ago and stuck them under her. She is so pleased. I love the sweet purr-cluck sound she makes and the chick heads sticking out from under her wing are adorable. She hatched one mutt last year and was a terrific mother so these babies are in good hands. I wish it would stop raining so she could find them so worms.

My daughter wanted to try hatching some Dominique chicken eggs in an incubator that she built. We had great success. Eight out of ten eggs hatched. Unfortunately, we only got 3 hens out of the eight and we are keeping the hens. Regardless of the sex, they have all been getting lots of attention and are very well socialized. One hen is extremely friendly and always wants attention pushing the others out of the way. They are 7 weeks old today and we really need to find homes for the rooster chicks. I placed an ad on Craigslist (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/grd/2389958833.html) but so far I have only given one away. If anyone is interested I live in Duluth, Georgia and you can get my email and phone number off of Craigslist. Unfortunately, I don't have enough posts to advertise in the Buy ~ Sell ~ Auction section. I also wonder what others do with extra rooster chicks if they can't give them away.
