Dominique Thread!

As I understand it, they are not super-broody, but broody enough to be good mommas.

I guess the early bug gets the chick.
I guess the bug has bitten already. With the weather as nice as its been, and all the fertile eggs that
we don't want to loose to winter, we have decided to fire up the incubator.

We will have weekly hatches starting Nov. 26 th. ( Saturday ) .

The breeds we are hatching now are :

Russian Orlofs
"Red" Dominiques , yes , These are Red Dominiques that are very rare .

All chicks straight run @ $10.00 ea.

Well, I'm only just starting to learn the basics of chicken genetics, but as I understand it the barring gene is dominant and Dominiques are technically just black birds with the sex-linked barring gene that causes the white bars on the feathers (which, if I understand it properly, is also why the males are lighter than the females - males have two copies of the barring gene and it exhibits dosage, so the white bars are wider on a male). You could probably build a "red Dominique" by choosing the appropriate cross, something that suppresses the black but expresses the red, has a rose comb, and the sex-linked barring. I wouldn't think it'd pass muster as a real Dominique, since by definition Dominiques only come in one color/pattern combination.

I just got back from looking at the "Red Dominique" and they do look a lot like my Dominique's.
I was also told that they are true. The guy said out of all his hatches they were all red with no discolorations.
He also said that more than likely the only people most likely to remember these would probably be in their 80's by now.
I'm thinking about trying to get some eggs so I can breed them side by side.
