Dong Tao or Ga Ho

Yeah. Shipped eggs usually have lower hatching rates. The elevation and handling can cause the airsac to detatch. It is best to let the eggs settle upon arrival so that the air sac goes back to the top of the egg before incubating. I got my hatch rates to 100 % doing that, but sometimes the eggs are too damaged inside to start developing.

Yes this is true but what is the furthest you ever shipped eggs ??

I am still in the process of working things out with my uncle, so I will update you guys! He has to first take a flight to another part of Vietnam to pick them up. I'm a bit worried about how every things going to work out, to be honest. Please do not get your hopes up! If all works out, I'll only be asking for shipping money. They will be first come, first serve as I do not want to profit off this and just want to learn more about the breed.

It is a non stop flight and he will be sitting business class.

Alright that sounds like interesting ...... I will keep an eye on your post ...

Does this breed have a sex-linked (auto-sexing) color? It seems that the hens are white while the roosters have color. Can you sex the chicks at hatch by color? If so, it would be great to get that auto-sexing trait into a breed that is a little more hardy and lays more eggs for more general use. I'm sure that the prices of these birds will be so staggering at first and I'm sure that the auto-sexing gene must reside on the hen's female chromosome...so it might be hard to get someone to cross their hen with anything but a Dong Tao Ga Ho Rooster...but maybe in the future. Anyone have pictures of chicks?

RobG, what you are looking at is the wheaten color sport, not necessarily autosexing, but maybe. Roosters will look like a BBR and hens are buff with some darker tail and neck feathers. Many breeds are autosexing as chicks. My Ga Noi Don are. Many barred chickens are. Rhode Island Reds used to be. Efficacy goes down when you deal with breeds whose breeders embrace the idea of adding this and that for "more production". Anything that at any point in it's pedigree came from a hatchery, will probably not have the highest accuracy for autosexing.

Good luck with the Ga Dong Tao, make sure they stay warm and get lots of sun. They are already in the US by the way, not sure if they got here through the proper channels, but they are here.

How warm do they need to be? Warm like Green Jungle Fowl or just not bitter arctic weather? I don't currently add any heat to my coops and we get down to zero Fahrenheit on rare occasions.

They are from Viet Nam, after all. I'm sure if you graded them down with something to give them more feather they would do a little better. But then they wouldn't really be the real thing.
