A few years ago in Britain there was this diseases called mad cow diseases and they didn't know where it came from ,they started to study the diseases and found out that many years ago in New Guinea the people ate the brains of their dead , because they thought this was suppose to make them smarter ,but instead they started dying from this awful diseases ,After they stoped eating the brains of their dead there was no more sign of this illness .The people in Britain were mixing there feed with ground up cow and sheep ,and the cows began dying with the same illness that the people of New guinea had died from .In Britain alot of young people got this diseases where it was transfered from the cows meat to them . It is a proten that attatchs itself to the brain of a person and can lay dorment for years befor a person will show signs of the illness. They found that any time a cow eats cow , people eat people ,chickens eat chickens and so fourth this can cause the diseases known as mad cow diseases and can be transfered to humans. I hope I didn't scare anyone .Just thought you should know

Uh... mad cow disease is a protein folding disease. Mis folded proteins cause lots of problems, including Huntington's disease. Something that is genetic.

There are human forms of protein folding diseases similar to that in cows known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The animal form the world is afraid of is Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. Humans in past cultures ate brains of diseased out of RESPECT for the ones who passed. Similar to how Ebola was spread rapidly in affected areas because it was customary to touch the dead to morn over them. Humans get "mad cow disease" by eating NEURAL tissue. BSE was initially thought to have occurred by feeding back DISEASED sheep INFECTED with Scrapie. The human risk factor was due to consuming meat such as ground beef that contained NEURAL TISSUE contaminants.

Personally I choose to feed my birds insect protein (farmed as some (wild) insects such as earthworms etc. are carriers of worms or other things) instead of meat protein as it is so readily metabolized compared to meat protein. This is in my personal circumstances as it is easy and affordable for me to come by ...
The exception I would personally be willing to make (re meat protein) to this would be egg yolk (and then I would prefer it cooked to exclude uping the eventual salmonella which might be causing problems in an ill chicken).

The use of ruminant meal in feed for ruminants was standard practice in the US feed industry as well as Europe. Cows had the disease all over the planet. It was just widely reported in the UK, where the media is vibrant.

Since then, all protein meal derived from animals comes from pigs. This includes your chicken feed, unless you are using a vegetarian chicken feed.

As a precaution, any cow slaughtered in the US for beef must be 30 months old or less, or all the cuts must be boneless (i.e. cull dairy animals must be turned into hamburger, not t-bone). This lessens the chance of coming into contact with spinal tissue.

"Mad Cow" comes from ingestion of infected brain and spinal tissue of the same animal (cow to cow....etc)

There is a version of it that is rampant in tribal people who still practice the ceremonial cannibalization of their dead (illegally, since their countries passed laws... but gotta ask-- how the heck are tribal people supposed to know/follow "laws" passed by a government they never heard of or do not recognize as part of their culture??)

also..its illegal to feed pigs pork products...it gives them some disease..
