I like Rainbow layers..... but, is up to us to change it? It seems Easter Egger is already an accepted term and is even used on the Ameraucana Club's website

I haven't read this whole thread -- I would like to, but don't have time at the moment...

Because of my website, just about every day someone emails me a pic of their bird and asks, "Is this an Araucana?" or "Is this an Ameraucana?."

I like to use a little sugar in my response, because I don't want anyone to feel I'm being snobby or rude. I usually say something along the lines of:

"Looks to me like you have a beautiful Easter Egger! These are birds of mixed heritage that carry the gene for those lovely colored eggs. They are usually good layers and often make great pets!"

Some people are very sensitive, and if they are corrected without any "friendly indicators" (sugared language and/or smiley faces), they feel like the person who corrected them is being mean or snobby. Because I raise Araucanas, I'm actually a bit afraid of being seen as such.

When I first joined the Araucana Club, I was deathly afraid to post on the forum there because there were a few people who were SO elitist and rude, who obviously thought they were smarter/better than everyone else, and insisted on being "right" all the time! At times I just wanted to type in all caps, "THEY'RE JUST CHICKENS, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!"

So I understand why some people may get prickly when someone else tries to educate them on Araucanas vs. Ameraucanas vs. Easter Eggers.

There was a post a couple weeks ago that got a little nasty because someone gave some misinformation, was corrected, and took it the wrong way. I steered entirely clear of that one!

That's pretty much my response, too, Anne, but sometimes all the sugar in the world wont make that medicine go down. And I really believe that Easter Eggers are fine birds, just not what they are advertised to be. It's not really a snobbery thing, it's really just wanting the facts to be the facts. As a bird owner, I'd want to know exactly what I have, not be misled.

I love "Rainbows"!! Let's push for that. It's not like we're dealing with an official breed. The whole point is that they are not a distinct breed.

Do you guys seriously think you can change everyone from refering to easter eggers to now saying rainbows?

Adding another name to the mix, certainly is NOT going to fix anything at all.....

Good thread... I have to agree with Cyn though. I want to know what I have and in turn, let people who get birds/eggs from me know what they are getting.

By saying something is an Easter Egger and not an Ameraucana, I am just hoping to help inform others. I think as hobbyists we should all want to be as informed as possible and inform others. I appreciate all of those who have helped me learn what I know today and those who continue to help me.

I have both Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers and honestly, love them both. One is by no means better than the other in my eyes, I appreciate the differences between the two, but I also recognize those differences. I appreciate that the Ameraucanas are bred to a standard and will work towards breeding my birds to that standard and also appreciate all of the dedicated work that has been put towards establishing them. I also love that my Easter Eggers have such variety in feather color, egg color and body type and that I never know what to expect when hatching them.

I guess the Ameraucanas satisfy my OCD side and the EEs my artistic/creative side.
