Instead of emails and letters.... why not start a petition? We can write it up and post it on a petition site and gather signatures.

Ok... I'll put it together and get it going... but what do we want it to say exactly?

We, the owners, breeders and enthusiasts of Araucana, Ameraucana and Easter Egger chicken breeds petition ALL hatcheries to change their misleading titles of Araucana and Ameraucana to the true and honest title of Easter Egger immediately! It is unfair and misguiding to continue to sell Easter Eggers under the breed names of two other breeds that they do NOT conform to. Listed here is the differences between the breeds. (You guys can help me figure out what all needs to go here)

Araucanas- Rumpless Tufted breed that lays blue eggs. Recognized colors -

Ameraucanas - Tailed Bearded and Muffed breed that lays blue eggs. Slate colored legs. Recognized colors -

Easter Eggers - Ameraucanas that do not meet the standard or mixed chickens that lay blue/green eggs - These come in any color imaginable and typically have green legs.

People should know what they are paying for and should not have to be victim to misleading and dishonest advertising. How can any purchaser trust your company when you willingly and knowingly continue to try and sell something falsely labeled as "Araucana and Ameraucana"? We petition you to correct this immediately. We are committed to spreading the word and making sure that people are educated about the difference between these breeds.

I say all of BYC emails a hatchery (we'll pick one then move to the next one) to change ameracauna to EE. If all 12,000 of us spoke out I think that we would do something. There's power in numbers.

I tried to start this up last month, but most said, "it's been tried; it'll never work."

and the letter. I sent it to a couple hatcheries and got no reply:

Dear ------Hatchery,

I would just like to request that you consider listing the chickens you refer to as "Ameraucanas/Araucanas" by their true name, Easter Eggers. As you probably know, true Araucanas are a rumpless, tufted bird and quite rare, while true Ameraucanas must conform to a limited color selection.

While I understand that people may come looking for the birds by these incorrect names, as one of the most popular hatcheries in the country I feel you should do your part to help stem the spread of misinformation by calling them Easter Eggers. I am active on several internet chicken boards and the sheer volume of confusion surrounding the names is staggering. Feed stores who get the chicks from you and other hatcheries invariably tell customers they have "Araucanas" or "Ameraucanas" and some people are disappinted to learn they do not. In addition, breeders working hard to retain the real breeds are hurt.

I have Easter Eggers (some from your hatchery!) and they are wonderful chickens. Please help dispell the growing confusion about all three wonderful breeds!!

I think that guitarists's petition is a great idea. You can easily set up a petition for free at ipetitions.com. WE used them for our petition to the city to change the zoning ordinance. I'd be happy to undertake setting that up if you want. The we can all circulate it among all the online chicken boards. Like Olivia's video... there is DEFINITELY power in grassroots internet networking....!!!!

That's why I think the petition might be a better idea as it will spread beyond that of the BYC members and will help to educate as well as make a point.
