Don't sick and/or get accident if you don't have money

The Canadians that come here for our excellent medical services have their expenses covered by their national health care plan. They are not paying out of pocket--who could afford it? U.S. healthcare is insanely expensive.

I thought health care was covered by your work? Like dental plans. I must not be noticing it cause I do not have as many years under my belt as most people, but when I go to the doctor I am only paying 10-15 dollar co pays. Or if I get an X-ray it will be like 50 then maybe some meds for about the same price. Or I am getting an amazing deal.

You must be very young.
yes you can get healthcare through work (sometimes), but you do pay for it.

I like Dunkomp single payer plan. That sounds very similar to our system over here. I cannot understand anyone's reluctance to buy into a single affordable healthcare scheme, since we all require medical care at some stage. We are one step along though as our hospitals are state run as well. This means they have to be transparent about their spending and of course their results.

I can choose to have my surgery in any hospital in the country, or indeed in Europe if I want to as we have recipricol healthcare arrangements with other European Union countries. If the waiting list for my surgery is too long, I can have my treatment at a privately run hospital at no charge to myself. This is why some Canadians probably come to the US for treatment, not because their own healthcare is poorer.

Independence is an admirable quality, but should never be confused with self centredness. I admit to being quite shocked at the indifference I see in the attitudes towards the less fortunate in our societies. Much is made of the spirit of the old pioneers, but surely, they could never have survived and thrived without the comradeship and support of each other? Doesn't the very word society suggest a team of people working together, pooling their talents for the greater good of the whole team? If you had been educated in England, you would have been frequently reminded, if you acted in a selfish way, 'There is no I in team.'

wow! That is scary!

is there anyway the community can get together and build a bridge themselves? maybe fell some trees and make a simple rope or floating bridge?

Hospitals are ran in this country at a potential profit, nobody intentionally runs a business at cost or a loss (except government) so yes it is expensive and to further that insurance companies are ran at a profit, so why on Gods green earth would it be cheap? I run a business and I can tell you I am not cheap.

Now if the government wants socialized medicine they need to vote it in or quit whining about it I mean they have been and able to to pretty much what they want anyhow. The problem is you cannot force people to buy it and not violate our civil rights (Obama found that out).

People in large do not trust the government so any program that comes down the pike is going to get a raw deal not necessarily because it is a bad program but because who is trying to sell it. If you have sponged off the government all your life and need to be spoon fed then yes you will like it when someone changes your diaper figuratively speaking.

I personally just purchased a plan for $300.00 a month family of 4 with a high deductible it is basically major medical.

The mayor of Portland just announced that he wants the city's health plan to cover sex changes for public workers and you wonder why I do not trust government and why the costs are high.

Amazing..

dunkopf explained it really detail...

I do support single payer system, although such thing won't be available in my country in close time.. (perhaps some decades to go..

Such political system are good way. Since too many party can bring 'divide' between people. While having two parties only also considered dangerous if the majority in parliament is not the gov.'s party.

as usual, those people didn't want to think first, they will just feel disappointment at the end, at when they need it then can't get it.

thank you chickened for the simplified version..

unfortunately, seems that US gov. haven't done the best to their voter..

I hope US gov. will do better than our gov. since it's hard to say that gov. can spend billion of dollar in military spend while they can't cover their citizen healthcare need.

several kind of job did protect / give you such insurance like here, worker have worker's social insurance. but they already got their wage cut to pay for the premium. it's almost

same like you buy an insurance.

I'm sure Canada is not a bad place to go. They have several city that got rated as best city to live in the world.

KristyHall, I haven't seen any action being taken to provide better alternative about this. I presume they lack of ability to build such substitute to the bridge. Even the gov. haven't done anything to solve this problem.

this is about the 'way to go to school'. there are several badness too effect to the education like broken school, flooded school, school with the roof being nestled by bat and many more. We already have 'region autonomy system' so this is not central gov. responsibility anymore, this is region gov. responsibility and it seems they haven't done many to solve this problem. but they did corrupt the fund to wealth their family and relatives..

chickened, shame on me

, me too just purchased insurance for me and planning to include my mom into the plan too. it seems that there's no more option available to protect our health care and avoid high cost when we need medical treatment than buying plan.

What country are you in, mulia, Indonesia?

I wonder if not providing health care for the poor actually is like shooting ourselves in the foot(for the USA).

As an example, now, as so many people do not get adequate mental health care in the US, they instead may deterioriate, even to the point of harming self or others. The loss in productivity, the extremely high cost of providing emergency services (for example shelters are extremely expensive, so is emergency interventions, etc, the court cases, the jailings, and the cost of all judge/court actions involved, plus, the damage to others' productivity, is measured in very large numbers. People not deterioring on the other hand...much cheaper.
