Dont understand electric fence

I don't totally understand electric fence either, but the dogs around here sure do.

Depends on your location I guess. Starting about 6" down there is a nice sandy layer that has a technical name, and below that it turns clay and under that is where it starts to be wet all the time. I know that sandy stuff is what gives us nice well water. It's only about a foot down to the damp stuff for me so yeah a 4' ground rod is plenty sufficient.
 
Due to very poor soil conditions(red clay) around here my ground circuit leaves the charger, goes through 6 8' ground rods, then to the aprons around the runs, then to the run fencing itself. Works great!!!
