so what is their desired purpose? They sound like guard birds? Or insect repellent.

Can they cohabitate w chickens? Did I read they can live up to 17 years??

I have 8 adults and recently had two keets that I will integrate pretty soon. I have mine for pest control. When we first moved here, I was doing tick checks on the kids twice a day and would find multiple ticks. After having the guineas free ranging, no more ticks! Literally. I haven't seen a tick in months.
I don't think they're great as guard birds because they tend to freak out about everyday things, so they're not very reliable at figuring out what is actually something to alert about or something they see all the time.
Right now I have mine all in the same coop as the chickens. I call them thugs, or the guinea gang, because they are mean to the chickens.

I was over at a friend's place reading until they woke up. It was early morning and I didn't want to just barge into their house.
My friends are wildlife rehabilitators, they have (had) a doe. She was friendly enough and stuck around because she was too scared to be a wild deer. She'd even stand outside their door and stamp her feet until they came and gave her a spritz of bug spray.
This deer came up to me really gently and rubbed her nose on me, I started petting her and giving her little scratches. She seemed to enjoy herself but I wanted to get back to my book. About three minutes after I resumed reading I get whacked. I get whacked again, and again, and again. The first few whacks were strategically placed at the the back of my head and almost knocked me out, the rest were hard gouging body blows.
I have goats, they have the same type of hoof as a deer. I get jumped on all the time so it really shouldn't be that scary. But this deer sharpens her hooves and really digs with them. If I were to compare, it would be like getting beaten with the nail pulling end of a hammer.
By the end of her beating I had a bleeding gash on my back.

Ha! I don't treat them as pets either. They're too flighty.

Don't chase them and they won't be so flighty. Always calm and steady when dealing with guineas.

Good Morning All! 5:30 here, I got up at 4:30
on coffee #2 fed my little puppies, went outside with them to a shocking 36, not that that is really cold my boy I wasnt ready for that.
I went off the deep end on the eating right last week, I made green chili sourdough patty melts & tomato soup, then eggs & sourdough toast-- but no harm / no foul
I had costco bagged asian salad for dinner last night-

It is best if they are raised alone and have separate housing. Their instinctive behaviors are different from chickens. They can cause a flock of chickens extreme stress.

I found out post beating, that she has done this to another girl. She's a sexist brat, no men get whacked, just ladies

I'm thinking she was mad that I had other things to do.

Don't chase them and they won't be so flighty. Always calm and steady when dealing with guineas.

I never chase them. They go to the coop themselves at night, so I really wouldn't have a reason to catch one anyway unless I needed to do a wellness check. So far that hasn't been needed.
