There was a show called "The day after" about a post nuclear America... interesting show.

I have been what I guess people would call a prepper my entire adult life. I have always tried to buy a little extra to stash away for a rainy day. My husband died 2 years ago and I'm still eating mainly off of our stored foods. I spend maybe $10-20 a week for various fresh foods (which I COULD do without if required). Sometimes disasters aren't because of weather or politics.........

Folks can make fun of my habits if they like, but when things get bad for them and they are standing there with ***** in hand wondering what they're gonna do, we'll see who's laughing then.

Most survivors would be preying on those how had the means to feed themselves and that would not be a pleasant experience.

For the survivors or those that had planned ahead?

I know in my neck of the woods, the preppers would certainly have the upper hand. I've got more than enough rifles to go around but was a little short on the shotguns. Added one of these yesterday and it is so sweet. Using 3 1/2" shells, it kicks like a mule.

My family are preppers. We are focusing more on creating a self sustainable farm right now. My aunt and uncle have a horse farm on a hill that includes a spring house, freshwater spring, gardens, wild blueberries, nuts and acres of forests. The house was built before electricity, so we would be able to still live in there. In case something ever would happen, we are packing up our chickens goats, dogs and cats, and heading over there. They are currently working on getting a billy goat. If the time ever came, we would have fresh water, horses for transportation, goats for milk and meat, and chickens for eggs and meat. The dogs wouldn't be much help but they could alert us to something coming up the hill. The cats would come because we just could not leave them. My aunt is in the process of canning her food, and we have a caned fruit. My stepfather has all the main ammunition and guns, my uncle has a few.

We have roles assigned too. My cousin was a boy scout and knows a ton about the outdoors. My aunt and mother would be gardeners. Stepfather and uncle would be protection/hunters. I know the animals so I would take care of them. My cousin's wife would take care of her children and she can sew.

well to reroute and reverse what I said,if anyone got offended I apologise,but the intensions were not to hurt anyone. Has any of these doomsday shows or any of us here thought about the air supply?? A nuke strike will fry the air. chemicals will fry the air.if I was an enemy I would first strike the air.the air affects everything, trees,grass,water,animals,food,and us.you can be in a bunker,and while some of them are way cool, but they all have external air supplies.gas masks are for they type of toxin only.it wont work for nuclear radiation or fallout.we first need to have an internal air supply.im a civil/structural/mechanical/electrical designer that has designed Nuclear facilities and am designing an uranium enrichment plant and making a bunker can be a tomb if the air is clogged.any ideas on BYC about internal air supplies that dont bring up the co2 level and that isnt an external source,or dependent on external electricity ( grid,solar panels,wind turbines,etc). To me, air is important, like Mr Miagi said: No breathe, no life!!!

Most preppers don't go for the whole "underground bunker" thing. Your criticism only affects the folks who favor that type of thing, and I'm *fairly* certain that if they're willing to drop several hundred grand on a bunker, they're gonna have air filtration systems.

Its not critisizm.its fact.Even the people above the ground have to ask themselves: if a nuke strike happens would you a. sit down and watch the show? b. think you can clean everything to be nuclear safe? or c. go underground? air filtration systems still have to have a vent for the toxin co2,and what is the power source??the best thing we can do is what we are doing now.going back and being sustainable backyardigans. if a nuke strike happens there is nothing you can do to prepare for that. if someone drop toxins,there is nothing you can do for that.now if the us economy collapses or civil unrest,then get out of the city like us and survive.

You realize that most preppers aren't doing it because of the risk of a nuke, right? From what I've seen, the main reason for folks prepping is the threat of economic collapse and disruption of the supply chain. Besides, one nuke, while catastrophic, would not pose any real risk to someone a hundred miles away from ground zero. A nuclear war is ludicrously implausible, since for a nation to initiate one, its leaders would have to be outright suicidal.

Also, CO2 isn't a toxin, it's a benign gas that acts as plant food. You're thinking of CO (carbon MONoxide), which IS toxic, and is produced through combustion.

Ever heard of CO scrubbers ? Also if you're near to a water supply you can make oxygen.
There's many power supplies including nuclear power.
