Hi there! I ordered some double silver laced Barnevelder (DSLB) hatching eggs in the mail. Due to the postal delivery crushing the box only one egg survived to hatching. Now this little, pullet?, is 3mo old to the day. Tiger as it is named, does not have the typical lacing of any of our other DSLB. It is predominantly black with mottled lacing/splashes of white only on the wings. I thought maybe Tiger may be a cockerel but the saddle and tail feathers aren’t looking that way. Is this really a DSLB or maybe actually a black and white barnevelder? Do I need to wait longer for more roo characteristics to develop? TIA

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

What a beautiful chicken and how lucky to have made it! That must've been an experience raising a sole chick, or did you have others to put it with at the time?

If nobody knows the sex of it here, you can try post it in our What Breed or Gender forum and folks will help you sex it.

We're glad you're here!

Hi! Thank you! It really is a beauty of a chicken. And so curious and friendly. Tiger was raised until she/he was 5wks by a hen we have who had gone broody with perfect timing. Below is Tiger with Foogie (mama hen) who is a DSLB. At 5wks mom lost interest and Tiger was left to fend for herself. She’s done well though. We have a flock of 15 chickens and one roo. Interestingly enough it was the rooster (Chief, also below) who took over protecting and raising Tiger after the Mom left her.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. This is a great place to explore and hang out. Hate to say it, I vote cockerel might be easier to buy sexed birds.
Thanks! We don’t mind a cockerel! We are growing our flock so truly cock or pullet is welcome. I just don’t know if this is actually a DSLB. The feather pattern is so different from any DSLB we have or have had.

That is so neat you wound up with a broody at the same time!

Chief and Foogie are also very beautiful! ❤️
