Well the coup is nearly done...should be done tomorrow... have to attach another door and the rest of the chicken wire.
The coup we have designed on the fly with materials we have available and buying as little as possible is about 36 sqft coop and 36sqft run ( coup on top run on bottom). For now it will be a chicken tractor. I have 1 roo and 8 standard hens for it right now. But my cousin brought up a really interesting idea earlier. Could we later with a few modifications make this into a permanent coup and attach a large run and have room for 8 more hens comfortably?

Wanted to know what you all thought of it... I will get pics up as soon as I can!

sounds good to me. I was thinking more like double the coop, triple the chickens. That is what usually happens.

Well...the main problem I see if you enclosed the bottom run section (making it a double decker coop, right? Coop on top of another coop?) is that if a run is shared, the new hens would likely try to crowd in with the original hens, and that would be a VERY tight space. Also, most coops that are elevated to include a run underneath are only elevated @18 inches or so. There would be no room for roosts. Removing the floor from the current coop and enclosing the run wouldn't work, because the area would be the same, only taller. That's just my 2 cents...

but i thought the process whent:

build coop big enough for chickens desired...
get chickens...
realized you dont have enough chickens...
get more chickens...
realize your coops not big enough for the extras and make a mad dash to build a bigger new one before the new chicks are old enough for outside...

so in reality wouldnt it be triplie the chickens THEN doubel the coop
