My 5 month old ginger broiler and big red broilers are laying soft shelled eggs. But today I got a weird double yolk soft shell from one and I’m wondering if it’s the breed or possible infection. They are new to laying but it’s been going on for 2 weeks now. Finally pinned it down to who. The rest of my old and new blended age flock is fine and laying normal eggs.

Odd eggs are normal for new layers for the first month or so, but if you are getting continual soft eggs then they need more calcium. Do they have oyster shells? Since you found out who it is I one I would start dosing her with calcium citrate.

A double yolk er egg can be common in new layers, but that is two eggs that have been joined together, I believe. One egg has stalled, possibly because she needs more calcium, and another has come along and then they became attached. I would treat with human calcium citrate tablets with vitamin D3 for a week. Shell-less eggs can break inside and set up infection, so make sure that they are getting layer feed, or at least have crushed oyster shell easily available.
