Double-yolks...The odds?

I just had a double yoke for breakfast! It came from one of our Maran's, and she's laid them in the past. She's a pullet and like others said, their bodies are figuring out how to lay and usually lay single eggs as they get older.

But...grandma had certain chickens who'd always lay doubles. I do remember her saying though she thought the double layers would lay less eggs overall though

I agree. In the beginning I got a lot of double yolkers. Now I get them every once in awhile.

Since everyone seems to know a lot about double yolkers, what would happen if they hatch?

I already answered that

Oh, now I see. Sorry! *smiles apologetically*

Sorry, I added the smiley to try and keep it from sounding hateful and it still did....I sure didn't mean it that way though.

My girls used to spit out a lot of double yolkers when they first started to lay. Now, I will get about 3-4 a week. Every once in a while, like today, I got 3, but I won't get any for a couple of days. Enjoy 'em while you are getting 'em!

I have 4 Golden Comets that have been laying just over a month and one of them has been laying a double yolker every other egg she lays. They are huge!! I've been trying to keep the shells in tact when I open them, without breaking the yolks so I can save the shells and still cook/eat the eggs. I'm going to make a basket full of huge egg shells for a centerpiece. I wash the empty eggshells, fill them with salt and seal the opening with candle wax, they will be displayed with the hole-side down so it can't be seen. I'll take a photo and show you guys when I get it all done. I just love getting double yolkers, but I wonder how the hens feel when they lay them??

Anyway, I just love my GC pullets

...they are so consistent and lay such beautiful eggs! I can count on 4 gorgeous dark brown eggs almost everyday (altho the little hen that's laying the doubles skips a day after a double...I don't blame her!) I just hope they continue with the doubles until I get enough for my little craft project.
