Double-yolks...The odds?

I have an older leghorn who will stop laying for awhile, then start laying these enormous goose eggs each day or every other day. They fill the palm of your hand and the double yolks are as large as the largest yolks from our other eggs. The eggs she lays are also not white but a pale, creamy color. There have been times when she will lay a triple yolker.

When I was little, one of our hens layed an enormous egg that yielded 4 yolks!

Normally when a hen starts laying eggs is when you will see double yolks due to the fact that their reproductive system hasn't yet matured, you hardly will ever find a older hen that lays a double yolk.

I'm wondering if double yolks are more common with certain breeds? I have one coming almost daily to every other day from a black sex link, which is a cross from a barred rock and rhode island red. From seeing the posts I'm wondering if Rhode Island Reds are more likely to do this.

I must say - these eggs are huge! I cannot even close an egg carton with one in it. They are quite the treat, as I have fond memories as a child going to the egg farm and if I was really good my mom buying a double yolk egg for me for breakfast the next day. Now, I get one all the time for my own boys to enjoy for breakfast.

Only one of our hens has started laying, a black sex-link, and every other day she lays a double-yolker. The egg tray looks comical with one big one, then small one, big, small...but she's steadily laying every day.

Best eggs we've ever had in our lives!

Now if only the other girls will catch on...

Don't laugh at this question...if you get a double yolk, does that mean you will not get an egg the next day?..
