Dozens of dead and dying chicks.

I would certainly go with the animal cruelty route. Heck, call your local news crew and tell them what happened and how great the hatcheries are being about it. That will give the hatcheries some good PR for anyone in your area that sees it as a thank you for the free chicks, and blast the postal service for killing the chicks in the first place.

USPS actually wants us to hold onto the dead chicks for the complaint so....my mother is currently digging up the ones we buried last night. She made space in our freezer to put them in for the time being.

EDIT. Ugh...Probably the worst thing we've ever had to do. Got them bagged, and double bagged and into the freezer. My mom said she's tempted to drop them off in front of the post master so she can see what she's done.

I thought there was a good chance they would want them...

I'd personally deliver all of the dead chicks to that postal employee. Then, depending upon their attitude I might engage the local animal welfare agency and local newspaper. As I said earlier their actions were sheer BS.
I agree- animal cruelty organisations have a bit more clout. Might be good to see if you can get them involved. And personally, I'd go to the press. So sorry for your loss

Oh, and just to mention, rightly or wrongly- I got a sick chick that wouldn't eat/drink through once by making a thin paste with chick crumb and sugar water in the blender, then crop fed him with a syringe hourly for a day, less intensely the next. He made it, but that would be impractical if you had as many as you have. Bit of a trick to keep in your back pocket for another day x

I did try that, but even some of the ones that did manage to swallow some down still died anyway. I think their recovery depends on how close to death they are. Only a few of the chicks recovered using that method. At least though it worked on a few of them.

OMG! I cannot imagine what that must have been like. I'm so sorry for you and disgusted.
