Oregon has no state tax and Washington does. The Costco just this side of the Columbia River does a huge amount of business.
Apparently everything in the US and all the States is so hunky dory that tax money can now be redirected to having cops peek in your vehicle for the nasty crime of *gasp* shopping!
What is the cost of police and tax collector's salaries and expenses vs the tax collected, I wonder.

I hope they lay of groceries and gas.. we buy all of our groceries and the majority of our gas in Ky... Tn doesnt charge a state tax but 10.25% sales tax, even on food, is still to much... gas is usually .20 a gallon cheaper in Ky and no taxes on food.. it will sure make things alot harder on us if they do border patrol...

Governtments' desire to tax is endless; its ability to waste money is even worse.

For what it is worth, I noticed on the Volkswagen website that they now have a Las Vegas delivery program. I guess Nevada doesn't charge sales tax on the automobile sales.

Fly to Las Vegas, buy the car and use the tax savings to fund the vacation. Works for me.

If every state used the same taxing system it woldn't be a problem. The best deal I heard of was one of my professors who retired from UW and got rehired due to his expertise. Well, he had already went to oregon and built his dream home and so he goes up to seattle to live in his old house there in the weeks... he is taxed as washington worker and he buys tax free in oregon... in addition to how he is paid as retired worker and gets health benifits of the univrsity plus no need to pay for SS. If you make a good amount of money in oregon, income tax rapes you there. Make good money and it's better to pay sales tax.

We should all keep in mind that our states won't function well without the tax it receives through our purchases. Playing by the rules benefits all AND keeps problems out the family business. Folks who live on the state lines (we do) frequently run into this problem, Every year the State of Wisconsin sends out a form wanting to know how much we spent on clothes in Minnesota (no sales tax on clothing there) they also like to receive their 5 1/2% . Two years ago there was a big fuss because the credit cards companies were reporting out of state sales on cigs to the Department of Revenue office. There were some big tax bills that went to a number of people. While our consitiution says we are entitled to the pursuit of happiness it does not address the right to privacy. Your cell is leaving a digital record of where you have been forever (all cell phones are required to have GPS locators) So keeping this in mind , we send in about $800 a year in sales tax on our out of state purchases via the internet (my accountant says we are the first folk he has seen that do this) The statute of limitations for sales tax is only 35 years anyway..............................

Good point too with paying your tax. Everyone here gripes about the gas tax and about how bad roads are... well, the gas tax went up more and now we have freshly paved roads between the major cities and its a much nicer drive. Even smaller areas have been repaved. Just some things are dumb... like how more money have been spent on fighting for and against the monorail than it would have been to just shut up and build the darn thing a decade ago.

I heard an interesting statement on the radio yesterday. He said that he is in favor of all of us paying our taxes, BUT when one segment of the population is unfairly taxed, that is not right. I agree with him. What if you shoe shopahlolics (which I am one) were taxed double because of all of the foot and leg injuries we are costing the health insurance companies. If we allow segments to be targeted for unfair taxation, when will it end......

I live on the border of MA and NH (in NH) we have state liquor stores on small roads and major highways going into MA (NH is cheaper) We also don't have a sales tax, so taxachusetts is always here shopping and the cops don't sit on the border...I do believe we live in A FREE COUNTRY and I can't see how you can be penalized for where you shop!

The US supreme court ruled against that in 1967. They stated that out of state mail order companies have no responsibility to collect sales tax for states where they do not otherwise have a presence. The law was changed in the 90's requiring large mail order companies with gross sales over several million dollars to collect for the states.
It sounds like MD may be trying to get around that. While not requiring the seller to collect the tax, a case could be made to have the seller report the transaction...

Even if a company isn't required to collect the sale tax for your state, you are still liable for use tax on out of state purchases that you haven't otherwise paid sale tax on. Wisconsin has a line on their tax forms where you are suppose to state the amount of these purchases and pay the applicable tax. Since they have no means of tracking or enforcing this, it has in effect become a voluntary tax.
