Dragonlili, please read.TN Law the new BIG BROTHER!

Keep in mind that we (people of Portland TN) dont go to Kentucky to avoid the tax but go because there is nothing in Portland to shop at, unless you count our 4 drug stores and 2 dollar stores.

Ain't that the truth? The state has too high of expectations of us if they think we are gonna drive 40 miles to Nashville or other cities to shop. Especially when gas prices are like they are!!!! H@#L NO, I WON'T GO!!!! It's not just us in Portland, there are plenty of people that scoot across the border from this whole area! Better strengthen the troops Bredesen. You're gonna need more than one area covered on the border!! Wait... is this TN or is this Mexico, I'm confused!!

We are in the Robertson county side but have a Portland address. That's something I've never understood, but I digress... Honestly it is bad enough when we in the first district are completely forgotten about up here. We pay a wheel tax, but I don't see any improvement on my roads. They would rather re-pave Main st. in Springfield 30 times than give us any attention up here.
I thought seriously about emailing Ch. 17, and voice my opinions there... but you know what that would do...put a big target on my back! They would probably seek me out, tell the roving tax collectors my license plate # and tell them to nail me to the wall!!! Since I am obviously, a pot stirrer and a labeled tax evader too

I'll check out the site and see what's what. Where exactly did you read that?
In the meantime... they don't stop these land barons like Larry Collins from taking over, do they? He keeps annexing Portland on out into Robertson county. The old addage is true, the deeper the pockets the more that gets done to your advantage. "But Larry is creating jobs" He can't do that...that only means that there will be more TN people shopping in Ky after they get off work of an evening."Oh yes, lets tax the crap out of these near poverty level citizens, but don't tell them what's really going on. Their just rednecks they wouldn't understand it anyway. Tell them they have to pay or else, they'll do it... they're dumb as rocks anyhow." :thun
edited to add:I read up on the Hall tax, "The individual income tax is imposed only on individuals and other entities receiving interest from bonds and notes and dividends from stock."

That doesn't affect me, I don't think. This doesn't explain my income... my income is well....non existant at the time. Can you enlighten me further on it? Is there something I'm missing?

RE the Hall Tax:

In my 12 years of being a tax advisor I think I have had 2, out of THOUSANDS that were subject to this tax! It's a tax on 1) Stock sales of stock from companies outside the state, or 2) Interest & dividends paid to you that exceed $2500 from sources outside of the state (excluding US bonds and gov notes).

I shop in KY when I can. My business is 1/4 mile from Oak Grove, KY. 8.5% sales tax on food is a lot when you've got a family of 6. I make my large ticket purchases over the internet. When I bought my TV I paid no S&H and saved about $200 over the local price and $200 in sales tax.

Have you thought of buying your cigs on the internet? I don't know if they are cheaper but my Dad used to get his from NM or someplace like that. He lived in NY where cigs are way more expensive though.

In comparison to a lot of states, TN is not bad, even though we pay out the *$$ on food. But you're not the 1st person I've heard about the mess of Robertson county from. My cous is in Whitehouse and pays Robertson county taxes on her business.

dragonlili, what side of 31-W does she have the business on? Usually if you are on the east side of it the Robertson co. rules shouldn't apply.
Since you are a tax advisor maybe you could help me understand another issue on a different forum that's been discussed. Sorry for going off topic... the question was...
"Does a Kid with diabetes qualify for disability tax credits?"
then one of the replies was...
'We were told by our accountant that kids with Diabetes do qualify for the disability tax credit, but you need to check with a tax preparer before you do this. The reason for checking first is that the IRS routinely audits some people in certain tax brackets every year (they can audit you without your knowledge and then if they want to, they can contact you for unrelated documentation or a formal audit). Claiming these expenses raises a red flag with the IRS if you are in one of these audit groups. "
My son is a type 1 diabetic, dragonlili, can you tell me if this is true about the tax credit and if so how do you claim it? Thanks, now I'll get back on track here...
I didn't know you could buy cigarettes over the internet. And yes it is a a mess in Robertson co. it's a continuous battle between good and evil here!!!!

Welp I am #3 for you..........I think the tax is completely unfair. Just because I put $ out of state. I have to pay 6% of the earning regardless if I physically see the $ of not.

Countrygirl--
There are exclusions for disability income and there are deductions for medical related expenses (If you can itemize deductions. ) But there are no tax credits other than child and dependent care expense for disabled dependents (any age) unable to care for themselves while both parents work or are f/t students. So if you can itemize, take all of the family's paid/ unreimbursed medical expenses, then subtract the total expense from 7.5% of you total income. If there is an excess that will be added to any other itemized deductions. If It exceeds your standard deduction, it benefits you, if not, it doesn't. As I tell my clients, Uncle Sam is not out to do you any personal favors; the majority or allowable expenses relate to income production only.

As for buying in Ky, I live near Ft Campbell. Good luck keeping track of license plates there. Yes, I think that newscast is out to make us paranoid. Hey, it was Fox 17! And I don't think the tenn dept of revenue could be bothered keeping track of use tax on all of its citizens.

Countrygirl--maybe you should make some real good friends in KY, ride with them (in their car) and go shopping. You just might have to let them do the actual purchasing and pay them back.

Just wanted to say "HI" to my fellow tenneseans, It's good to see you all. I am in SW Tn, and I don't like the taxes anymore than anyone else, but I don't think I want an income tax. I think our sales tax is too high, but it probably gets more people that way.
