Dragonlili, please read.TN Law the new BIG BROTHER!

I was gonna say about NH and MA...
MA changed it's blue laws because they were all going to NH to shop and they thought they were losing money...
roll.png
NH doesn't have a sales tax, but their meals tax is 7% and their property taxes are high too.
My SIL lives in NH.
If our salestax is going to state upkeep fine, but we've got potholes on some of the state highways that could trap an elephant...so I don't know where it's going except into someone's pocket.
They're also trying to get tax money from folks that have been buying tax free butts from the Indians too...

Yup, it's like that with Maine and NH. NH is tax free and Maine has crummy taxes. So whenever I make a trip to NH I stop at the liquor store, lol.

Well, not every time. They actually have an exit on the interstate (going either way) that gets off just at the NH liquor store. Like I am going to claim a bottle of Tequila on my taxes.

Well the old saying is there's 2 things you can count on... death and taxes. Which if the politicians have their way we will be in essence, TAXED TO DEATH!!! Sure... raise my taxes, but when in the H#@L are you gonna compensate that with raising my pay? The cost of living now a days is monstrous to say the least.
The efforts wasted on such trivial things leads me to believe that this country has gone completely to the dogs. I wish they would spend more time where it's needed, like on health insurance, elderly care etc. What about them? Nationally, what about the real border that we are having trouble with? Instead of state to state borders. It is so obvious that "we the people" don't exist anymore. Oh sure tell me to write my congressman, yadda yadda yadda, alot of good that will do. Vote, hmmm, last vote it was a 4 hr wait to get in, who's got 4 hrs to waste when it's obvious "we the people" will never be heard?! And I can't spend 4 hrs in a voting line... I have to go to work so I can pay these ridiculous taxes that they are nailing us with.
As I said I just dare them to pull me over for shopping in a sister state. IRATE!! that wouldn't even describe what I would be like.
I buy my son's insulin in KY, are they gonna get me for that too? Oh after all... he doesn't need it does he? ONLY TO LIVE!!! I have the right to keep as much money in my pocket as I can to help improve my family's living. Cutting costs and comparison shopping is survival, not tax evasion!!!

Write a *nasty* letter to our useless governor, Phil Bredesen (TN). He is the one who figured he'd discriminate against smokers to get a mess of 'extra' money for the state. And that's *EXACTLY* what it is, discrimination. If all the smokers in TN quit, who would he discriminate against next? Motorcycle riders? People who ride/own horses? People who don't have health insurance?

Like I said, write the governor and don't cut him no slack. I didn't!

Back when I lived in New York, something like this was afloat. Paramus NJ has about a million outlet malls and shopping centers and New York has high taxes. One Christmas season the powers that be in New York decided to get a little of their own back and started stopping cars to get the tax money people from people Christmas shopping in NJ. Needless to say, this did not last long, the public outrage was tremendous, as it should have been. Many states try this most fail.

Hi
I live in Portland also. (I cant believe there are 2 of us here)

Have you seen this?

Tennessee Consumer Use Tax
Contrary to popular opinion, online and catalog sales are subject to use tax. This tax has been on the law books since 1947 and is the counterpart to the sales tax. When someone buys merchandise online or through a catalog and the seller of the merchandise does not collect sales tax, the consumer who bought the item has a legal obligation to file and pay use tax on the merchandise. The use tax is the same rate as the sales tax.

And, purchasing merchandise outside of Tennessee, whether done physically or electronically, may not exempt someone from paying use tax if an equal amount of sales tax was not paid to another state at the time of purchase.

As an example, if you buy $100.00 worth of food in Kentucky, and you pay no Kentucky sales tax, you owe the State of Tennessee $8.25 in use tax. (Food in our county in Tennessee is taxed at 8.25%.)

If you buy $100.00 worth of non-food items in Kentucky, and you pay $6.00 in Kentucky sales tax, you owe the State of Tennessee $3.25 in use tax. (Non-food items in our county in Tennessee are taxed at 9.25%, but you can subtract the 6% you paid in Kentucky. This leaves a 3.25% use tax payable to Tennessee.)

Please note that Kentucky has sales tax AND income tax. Because Tennessee does not have an income tax, our state has to rely much more on sales tax. This is why it's so important to pay use tax on items brought into Tennessee.

So, how do you file and pay use tax? It’s easy. Click here to download the return. Then follow the instructions, and complete and return with use tax payment to the State of Tennessee Department of Revenue.

blevisay, I know you are serious in your post... but ARE YOU SERIOUS? I dare say that there will be few and far between that will file this on their taxes. We are taxed to death as is.
In my opinion being on the border, this is more of a personal attack on my freedom as a citizen. I've spoken to plenty of people here about this and they are as outraged as I am. It's a matter of our right to privacy. If they do try this I see plenty of outraged citizens making a stand against it. Not that it will help much, since "We the people" haven't had a voice for some time. I agree with Bubba, Welcome To America Land of The Fee!

LOL
YUP That was taken from the Portland Tn website. Also look at the personal income tax (Hall tax) That one gets my blood boiling.

Keep in mind that we (people of Portland TN) dont go to Kentucky to avoid the tax but go because there is nothing in Portland to shop at, unless you count our 4 drug stores and 2 dollar stores.
