drake prolapse

Well it seems the ducky gods have decided to test me or something but my beautiful Cayuga drake's penis has prolapsed. It hasn't been long but I have no clue when this all started. I just noticed it earlier at about 3ish its now 530pm. How long its been like is I'm not sure but it isn't black or anything like that just red and raw looking. I smothered it in triple antibiotic and used a warm compress to try to help it go back in. Something I learned from work since one of my clients has a prolapse problem. But the poor ducky wouldn't loosen up for me and he was just stiff stiff. So I told my mom maybe a warm bath with some treats will help him relax and ease his mind so it can go back in. Well it was in for about maybe 5 or 10 mins. So I put him outside in the outside pen and when I looked out the window 5 mins later it was back out again. So I've got him in my cat carrier on a clean towel in my room with the door closed to try and give him some privacy. I've looked on this site and read all the threads but my drake's penis isn't as bad as what the other threads drakes were. Is there anything else I should do? He is my breeding drake and I'd hate for him to lose his pee pee. Any suggestions?

Edited to add: he is also making these gagging noises like he's going to throw up. My dog was sitting next to me and I thought it was him but it was really the duck. Anyone know what that could mean?

Have you checked for obstruction? I mean, in his bill.

You need to keep your drake away from the girls for at least 3 months. actually keeping him away for a time now will be good because from what I read on line they lose this years penis and will grow a new one next year. That's why for most of us breeding season is over and drakes are finally mellowing out. So keep it slathered with Triple antibiotic and let him have some swim time daily but not with the girls. Hopefully it will go back in on it's own. Also Vitamin E capsule opened and smoothed on my give some relief. Keeping him on towels is a real good idea too. And yes check his throat for an obstruction.

No obstruction in his bill. He quit making that noise. He was panting funny when I was trying to get it to go back up in so idk if that would make him make that noise or not. Yes I read to keep him away from the girls. It looks like he's gonna be an inside ducky for awhile maybe. I'm not sure how I'm going to go about that just yet. I'm more worried about getting his thingy back where it belongs. They lose their penis? How weird. I will have to do some research on that and see if I can find any information that might help me. I used towels with Cheese when she was inside I find them are easier to keep clean. Although I'm brooding the ducklings on towels right now too.. looks like I mightneed more towels lol. Is there anything else i can do for him? I'm so worried it won't go back in and I'll have to cut it just like most people on here did and I really don't want that. I mean if it comes down to it I will but I'd rather that be the very last option. He's more well behaved than Cheese was. He at least don't bite lol. Also I started him on acv in his water was that a good thing or should I switch to a pro biotic or something?

So I found a few sites that say using sugar on a prolapse helps to reduce the swelling so I am going to try that tonight and see what he looks like in the morning.

Seems like I read that too, or perhaps it was honey? I know that I read do not use Preparation H. I have read that the penis part can fall off by itself. I would not cut it! Hopefully he will improve with a few days rest.

Cutting is last resort for sure, and the other day I sent a friend a link about the penis falling off at end of breeding season and last night looked all over for it and can't find it. But I did read that is what happens. Try letting him soak in some nice warm water and then slathering him up with triple or vit E or what ever mixture sugar seems it would have to be mixed in something. and just give it time. How's he looking this morning? also what you saw last night when working with him was pain probably,.

Thanks for all the information. I figured I'd give a detailed descibtion of what I did since the other threads about this aren't very informational. Yesterday I had given him a bath in the tub and it was back in so I brought him outside in a pen and within 5 mins it was back out again. So I brought him back in and put triple antibiotic on it (without pain reliever). I slathered it on to keep it moist. Then put him in a cat carrier on clean towels with his food and water. I added acv to his water. After a bit a put him back in the tub with warm water and left him in there for about an hr. I make sure that his tub water has time to cool off so that he gets the warm and cold effect on his wee wee. I let the water out and put sugar on it as best as possible and put him back in his carrier for the night on a different towel since he had dirtied that one so quick. I'm not sure what he does but I know that he makes a weird noise and a bunch of liquid comes out of him. Its really gross and I still haven't figured out quite what it is yet. This morning I ran him a warm bath and put him in it and cleaned his carrier really good. His wee wee looked a lot better and wasn't quite as swollen. I'm not saying it was the sugar for sure that did that since i'm no vet. Although considering it with all the at home vet services I give to my duckies lol. Anyway, after his hr bath his penis had went back in but again a few minutes later it had came back out. I put some sheets on the floor and got out the puppy pen so he could walk around some and get some excerise. After that I lathered his penis in triple antibiotic and put him back in his carrier. After a few hours I put him back in the tub again with warm water and again for about an hr. I try to get him in the tub as much as possible and I must admit he is so well behaved and I couldn't of asked for a better patient. This time his penis was back inside and I was waiting for that funny noise and the big liquid mess but I got nothing for about two hours. I did have him sitting on my lap on a towel for about a half hr and then decided I wanted to bake a cake so I blocked the kitchen off from my dogs and put him in there with his food, water, carrier, a towel, and his mealworm treats. He enjoyed being able to walk around and what not. And I enjoyed being able to spend time with my ducky and bake, it was wonderful. I stayed with him while it cooked in the oven and his penis had stayed in the whole time and no icky mess. I'm not sure if its still in or not as I haven't checked yet but I will keep up with the detailed updates. That way if anyone has this problem they will be able to follow what I did or tweek it to meet there needs.

Sounds awesome and you are a great duck vet. with out the degree. LOL about olive oil or vitamin e or triple antibiotic I think the main thing is keeping it moist and all of these would work, and all have healing proprieties. Now he cannot be with the ladies at all. I even bought some Manuka Honey since I have to be vet here. I have spent quite a bit of money getting the med chest where I want it to be for my flock/dogs and us. even bought stuff to do stitches if need be[hoping I never have to do this] But I feel that being prepared is the best I can do.

I hope you see his wee wee stay put today which means he is on his way to full recovery.
