Miss Lydia, the penis doesn't fall off, as with the testis it regresses after breeding season and then enlarges again prior to the next breeding season.

Thank you Speceider for clarifying this, I did read that it did though.Miss Lydia, the penis doesn't fall off, as with the testis it regresses after breeding season and then enlarges again prior to the next breeding season.

I am so naïve, I read it here Clint, I had seen it posted on BYC a few times so went and found this.Miss Lydia,
I don't doubt you read it....and we all know everything on the internet is true!![]()

LOL I must have missed that commercial H. and if I ever found anything in the duck pool that even resembled one I'd take a pic. But after 9 years never have.Yes, I read it too!! In fact, I read that Scientists were studying the phenomenon and applying that knowledge to human males, who'd suffered injuries or something along those lines. And I think I even saw pics, here on BYC... Like "look what I found in the duck pool". As far as I know all the drakes penises have stayed attached here. LOL (French model moment--you know that TV commercial?)
How is the prolapse today?
She actually said it wastes away, but I have heard others say that it falls off. all I know is my Muscovy drakes get very mellow this time of year and the carnukles have gone from deep red to very light red. So something had defiantly happened. I don't think I'll be checking out the vent area though.Miss Lydia,
I believe you have mis-interpreted what was said.....they don't lose it....just a large size reduction....very different from it dropping off and regrowing......in the winter, the testis may only be 3mm in length, during breeding season, they're probably over 15 mm....because they are smaller in winter doesn't mean they have lost them and re-grow them...only that they regress. Why would a bird expend the energy to maintain an organ that is not serving it's primary use. flightless birds have smaller pectoralis muscles than flighted birds (outside of selective breeding)...again, why put the energy into something that is not functional. I am well aware of Patricia's work, and know she hasn't said the penis is shed and regrows...it regresses and regrows,
Clint
It came from the link I posted earlier, and here is part of it.caruncles, behavior, testis and penis size are controlled by testosterone.......if it fell off how could one vent sex year round......having vent sexed each month of the year, I can say it is there...easier during the breeding season, but is there. Also, you are reading a blog referring to Patricia's papers....Patricia didn't say that.
