drake prolapse

It came from the link I posted earlier, and here is part of it.
this is the quote: A drake’s penis substantially wastes away at the end of one breeding season and then regrows as the next season begins. it say's the persons name is Barbra Duck???

That is someone, presumable named Barbra interpreting Patricia's papers...Patricia was doing her work for her PhD......I have no idea who BarbraDuck is....certainly not Patricia...Patricia has published a couple of papers on her work and she does not say that....that's Barbraduck's interpretation which is not correct....it regresses... doesn't "waste away" and then regrow....just enlarges under the control of testosterone.

Clint I'm not disagreeing with you at all. I didn't have any idea one way or the other just going by what others have posted here and what I read from this BD person.

This is an interesting thread. Speceider, you sound very knowledgeable about birds and I always enjoy learning new things. I do not understand how testosterone controls caruncles?

To the original poster, for what it is worth, I had a cayuka drake get a prolapsed penis last year and he ultimately recovered 100%. My vet explained there is a muscle that holds the penis inside body and when overused, it strains that muscle. You must rest that muscle until able to retract penis. We had to separate drake and keep his penis clean and moist, and bring him to clinic for treatment if penis got infected. After about a month, my drake was able to pull his penis back inside almost the entire way. At that point, I moved him back with flock and all was well.

Ian, Caruncles, like almost all secondary sexual characteristics respond to testosterone.....non breeding, they become slightly smaller and duller in color, in breeding condition, they enlarge and brighten in color.....color and size are probably something involved with female selection of mates.

I'm thinking Testosterone and molting must have a link just watching my mature drakes it seems carnucles begin to fad and sexual activity stops and molt begins. Now they are all passive. What joy.

Wow you guys have been busy while I've been gone lol. Sorry I haven't updated. O.k. so yesterday his penis was doing good. Hmm what a weird sentence that was. Anyway, I was thinking of using something other than triple antibiotic to keep his penis moist but I decided to just keep with the it since it would help to prevent an infection. His penis has stayed put for almost two days now. Talk about speedy recovery. His penis was never out real far so I think that helped. I'm not sure what caused his penis to not go back in all the way but I know that it didn't go back in with just a warm compress because it was swollen and I needed to get the swelling down. Since I caught it so quick and worked hard to keep it clean it didn't take long for the swelling to go down. I kept up with his baths and acv or electrolytes in his water even though his penis is back where it belongs. His poop has started to have more of a form to it so today I put him out in a pen by himself. He was very happy. But for some reason he stayed in the Tupperware container (pool) for almost the whole day. I'm not sure why that is. Maybe he is still sore or something? Now I have run into a slight inconvience I suppose you could call it. His pen has its own smaller duck house attached to it so he isn't in the regular duck house but I feel bad because he's all by himself. I know he can't be with any girls but what about males? My males get along well and hardly ever fight but I'm afraid they might or my duck might try to dominate him or something. Should I even try a ducky friend with him or no? When I say my males get along well I really mean it, like when he went outside today my runner drake and Rouen drake ran to his pen and talked to him for a good 5 mins. They were happy to see him. Its just 3 months is a long time to be by yourself.

hmm poor fella is all I can say to that one. Lol I'm glad someone else found it humorous also.
And I don't mean to contradict Holly but you could try a visit and see how it goes, I know here sexual activity is over and done for this year so maybe the 2 boys will be fine together. only way to know it to try when you can watch and if the other drake tries anything get him out. As long as your peened drake can see everyone he'll be fine, and most likely with the time of year it is you may not have to keep him peened as long. Watch your ducks are they still mating? if not then give him a good month by himself then put him with the rest. If no mating is going on then he can't relapse.
