Drake with Prolapsed Phallus

Thanks! Bumpy seems to be doing much better this morning. I let him swim in the bathtub while I cleaned his cage and he was definitely enjoying himself. Yesterday he just floated around, looking miserable.

Regarding the issue Rudy is experiencing, I would recommend taking him to a vet if you’re able to. Bumpy has continued having regular bowel movements throughout his ordeal, and it’s very concerning that Rudy hasn’t had any in 30+ hours. How much is he eating and drinking?
Thanks for the response. Glad to hear Bumpy is feeling better.

Rudy's appetite is definitely reduced but he has eaten some and seems to drink a normal amount; seems like it could just as easily be attributed to stress. He spends most of his time in his tub so it's possible that he's pooping in there. Water doesn't seem nearly as dirty as normal, but they normally have the run of the yard and track tons of mud into it so I'm not sure what level of mucky poop alone should create.

I think I'll try bringing him inside this afternoon to see if I can confirm if he is or isn't pooping.

It feels callous to say but I don't think I can justify a Vet trip. The male ratio is already too high in my flock and, from what I've read, I'm expecting that I'll have to rehome at least one when they start getting too aggressive this spring. Rudy was in the lead to be the one I kept, but won't be able to justify the cost of ultrasounds or exploratory surgery when I know I might have to cull one of them in a few months anyway.

For now, he doesn't seem to be in any serious distress, in-fact the prolapse doesn't even seem to be bothering him anymore... although it is still out and gentle pushing still doesn't get it back in.

Can you post some pictures of it?
If there is dead tissue that has turned black like bumpy you're not going to be able to get it back in.
The dead tissue will have to be removed.

I don't blame you on the vet trip.
I can't justify it to myself either taking a duck or chicken to the vet.

Here's a photo. Definitely looks a little irritated but has stayed clean and moist. I can't find any damage or evidence of dead tissue that would explain why it's not going back in. That said, I don't routinely inspect duck penises to know what falls into the realm of "normal".

The phallus is becoming inflamed ( you can appreciate erythema (redness) going on which is not normal for a duck phallus). At the stage, it is now, if you're not able to get it back inside, surgical resolution may be needed as it will likely turn more inflamed, and necrotic.

I would start by lubing up the area, with something such as KY jelly, or as @shawluvsbirds suggested, something like Honey; preferably for medical use, alternatively, you can make a sugar paste and use that as well. I have used DMSO gel diluted down in cases of prolapse with good success if none of those work either. Gently massage the area, and make to sure to get all the tissue well lubricated. At home, that is pretty much the extent of what you can do, if you see no improvement, the phallus may need to be removed.

Poor guy! :hugs Great advice from everyone. Can you take more pictures of it stretched out, and does this area seem abnormally yellow to you?

Your drake might be too fat (yellow part in your picture) and the fat pat can exert pressure and not allow for the penis to retract.

Thanks for your help! I lubed it up with Neosporin yesterday. With the amount of time he spends in his tub drying out hasn't really been an issue. I'll give honey a try, seems like it would dissolve off quickly if he gets in his tub, but I was about to bring him inside for a while anyway. I don't have any KY but can try Vasolene when I put him back out in his yard isolation area.

Any thoughts on how long to wait before snipping? My inital plan was to continue to isolate and lube as needed until it either starts to die or gets better, but I'm now more urgently concerned about the fact that he's not eating much and possibly (why I'm moving him inside for closer observation) not pooping.
