Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

Jim I've read once wolves move in the coyotes leave. Wolves will kill all coyotes they can get a hold of. Not sure which I would prefer.

We had to put one of my two remaining donkeys down 2 days ago. He had founder and it had gotten way worse. The remaining donkey keeps calling for him. I had hoped that he would understand seeing his brother was deceased, but I guess they can't reason that way.

Plans are to try him in with the goats to see if they can get along. Otherwise he has chickens and ducks for company, but it's not the same as the 25 year relationship he had with his brother. It also was a shock to me. I knew it was coming but thought we had more time.
I am so sorry for your loss! I can only imagine how incredibly sad a grieving donkey must sound! :hugs

that has to be one of the toughest things to do. 25 years is a long time to get attached.. it becomes a part of you.
goldfish is the perfect pet. they always die before you can get attached to them.
the meat slicer that I borrowed from my brother was a bomb.. I ended up sharpening a good knife and cut the slices with it..
I have the slices lined up nicely in a cake pan. soon I will mix up the pineapple sauce and bake it for awhile.
tomorrow I will just have to heat it up while the stuffing is baking in the oven.

They can live as long as a dog. You can still get attached. I got attached to mine and it was only 4-5 years.

I still have one of my original goldfish. I got it in 2003. He's old, thin, and mostly blind. I also have one yoyo loach gotten the same year. Most of my goldfish live between 10-20 years depending on the variety. I also have 10 year old angelfish. My old horse was 30, and the mom donkey was 30 when we put them down. Had those their whole lives too. The parrot was hatched in 1992. So she's 32. Seems I'm running an old folks home here.

I'm like the mafia. Once your in, it's for life here.

I love that!!!

Lisa, I am so sorry about your donkey! My two lived with three sheep and many goats as their protector, so when Tommy died, Jerry still had companions. I hope yours finds some comfort from its ruminant friends.

I also hear you on running an old folks home. Every year, I lose some and swear I won't get more because it's too hard to see them go. Every year, I lie. I know that my kitty with a tumor is living out his last days, and it's so sad because he is the nicest boy.

So far, I am holding fast to the no-more-ruminants rule; I am down to one sheep and two goats. But, what will I do with all that pasture when they're all gone? I am much less successful on not acquiring more poultry; six new chicks last year.

We used to have aquariums but none of my fish lived as long as yours. My favorite was a cichlid who would pop the surface of the water when he wanted to be fed and, who unlike nearly all of the other fish, would "follow" me when I walked past the large tank. I was sad when he died, and sadder still that after he was buried in the backyard, something dug him up!

Jim, I have a great meat slicer I wish I could give to you. My Jim was a serious carnivore, but I haven't eaten meat in years and don't need the slicer to carve veggies. :) Some day, I will get around to getting rid of it, I suppose. And, mountains of other unneeded stuff.

Warmer weather means melting drifts coupled with plenty of mud for the dogs to track in. Still, it's a great improvement over recent weather. Here's to hoping winter is at least thinking about packing her bags and leaving early!

I quit raising hay burners because I had to buy all my hay. I didn't have a source close by and it was a pain to track down a seller.
I could load 4o to 5o bales on my truck.
often I would have to travel 30 miles or more, one way.
yesterday I made pineapple glaze for the ham. will serve it on the side for people who might not like it.
today I will make a small batch of dressing and a small batch of sweet potatoes. Annie doesn't want any left overs that she would have to freeze..
I just found out that people are not arriving until after 3:eek:o. good, that will give me plenty of time to get ready..

With this weather Jim and you making ham it makes me think of Easter. Hope you have a good dinner.

Barb I said no more goats, but I'm starting to think about them again. The thought of my shed getting empty gets me sad. 2 more kids won't hurt anything? Right? We make our own hay. Will definitely need less going forward.

the ham dinner was de a success.
the dressing turned out great.
as usual, nobody took any leftovers home with them. so,, I get to snack on the sweet potatoes, dressing and ham for a few days.
GGB can squat and stand with great poise and ease. something that I can no longer do.. however, he refuses to take any steps unless somebody holds both of his hands.. it really frustrates his mom..lol
I say , "patience grasshopper" lol
people can't wait until the kid can talk and walk, and then they tell them to shut up and sit down..
