I buy the yellow hoses at Wal Mart, I use it to water my animals, my plants, and me when I'm outside in the heat. I figure if I'll drink out of it, my birds can drink out of it.
By the way,, in order to leach enough of any chemical out of a hose to affect you, you would have to fill the hose up, set it out for a few months, allow the water to absorb any chemicals in the hose and then drink the old, dirty, nasty, water out of it. How many are going to do that?? The water is running, it's not picking up anything from the hose, it doesn't have time to.
Sears sells hoses (that last almost forever) made out of recycled rubber. I've never read their tag and am not sure if it too has lead, but it might be worth checking out!
