Honestly around here, other than a one-shot treatment with electrolytes (if someone is overheated), I give either plain water or water with the OACV in it (organic apple cider vinegar) and even then in the summer, I only give 1/2 ounce per gallon of water rather than 1 ounce/gal.

I had to say, I was disappointed to read about the FFA judge. Our APA judges handle birds wonderfully; perhaps the FFA judges could learn a thing or two from that. By the way, your son might be interested in some of their showmanship classes. I don't have kids, but I knew a bunch who would show through APA at local shows and it was neat to see them learn stuff through the programs.
