Drought effects in Texas

My hubby would agreee with you on the cedar trees....we are constantly fighting them in our pastures. Sad about the other trees that you're losing. He's been saying the same thing as your brother.....we need a hurricane to push this stinking high out of here. We got .35" in three little showers on sunday late afternoon.....doesn't last long when it's well over 100. One thing different for us compared to 1980 was that in 80 we had the high temps but didn't start out so dry......we had moisture in the winter and early spring.

I remember early this spring the weather channels were saying we expect MORE hurricanes this year but we didn't get anything on the mainland.

Yeah in 80' we were this dry on top of the hot temps.

I asked him today when the Summer High usually starts to lose its strength and he said around Labor Day, so hopefully we can survive another month.
One tidbit he did tell me that wasnt such good news is he said that the la nina has gone away and is neutral at the moment but they are thinking the la nina may return this fall. That is very bad news for us because it was the la nina that has caused us to be so dry in the past 10 months to begin with..........just keep praying for a tropical system

ps....cedar trees are a bane of my existence down here. they are absolutely useless except for making fence posts. Otherwise they just sit there and choke out everything else while sucking thousands of gallons of water out of the ground on a daily basis......hate em

I did a lot of research on cedar eradication a few years back and I despise the invaders as much as any good Texan but two points about them: they do suck thousands of gallons of water, but only when there is water. Cedars actually shut down their root system when the drought becomes this severe. And the problem with getting rid of them at this point is that they've already killed off most of the other trees around them in the past 100 years, they are the only root systems keeping the ground together in many parts. If these cedars start dying off, like I see many of them doing already, the erosion is going to be horrible. We're stuck with them now.

As much as I hate cedar trees,at least they are providing some shade right now and every little bit counts when the heat index is 115.

If Tropical Storm Don makes landfall when and where they are predicting, we could get up to 2 inches of rain. I sure hope Don comes in slow and dumps lots of rain over a day or two so it has a chance to soak in.

Go Don!!!!
