Drowning sparrows??

I doubt a healthy sparrow would have a problem getting out of the bucket if he fell in, unless it stayed in there untill soaked ....... I'd suspect an illness: sick animals often seek water, especially during hot weather. We had an outbreak of EHD that killed 60% of the whitetailed deer in our area a couple of years ago, and the dead ones were always found along waterways and around ponds ...... sometimes dozens in one place .......

With all the bird flu going around in the midwest, I keep the wild birds out of my coop.

This is kind of what I thought. My coop is mostly free range and I can't keep birds away. I just don't want them to infect my chickens.

Every fall, water buckets with dead birds, don't know why, think it's all the young ones, but it happens every year, I can't keep birds out of my shed either, as it's a 40x40 pole building, just have to put up with dumping and refilling, I have yet to have any trouble with diseases, and there are a lot of birds in with my chickens at times, so I wouldn't worry, because there's nothing you can do about it, just dispose of the dead birds away from your chickens, though I just fling them into the tall grass.

Thanks. I just throw them in the ditch.

Found a dead sparrow once a couple of years ago and I tossed it. A few minutes later I saw one of my free range sex links running with it and eating it. If that happens again I will dump it out in the pasture. So gross

Might sound terrible, but I kinda wish my sparrows would drown. I have at least 2 dozen that stick around all winter and eat the free range layers feed and drink their water. They poop all over the place and dust bathe in my chickens dust bathing areas so I'm afraid they're going to spread parasites and possibly other diseases. I might try and keep the layers locked up for a few weeks this fall to see if those nasty mooching sparrows will go away. They live in the barn that's maybe 100 feet from my house
