Drug testing for jobs..

I think it's a huge violation, and will NEVER take a drug test to get or keep a job. I also don't care too much what's legal or illegal, just what's wrong or right.

I am a very freedom/independence kind of girl. I work for myself so don't have to worry about this crap anymore. I have no trouble passing a drug test but still wont take one.

I worked with a gal who was in a custody battle with her ex-, was on WIC (Women and Infant Children), foodstamps and Idaho Housing. She smoked weed every day. She knew if she got dinged, at work, on the pee test, she'd lose her kids, her house and her job.

Did not stop her. I just don't see a reason to risk anything at all, for an illegal, momentary high.

A guy who I like a whole lot, had to do his test and when he came back he told her "You're next."

She went pale and stumbled her way to the bathroom, where they were administering the test. She told them her name, they looked it up and she was not on the list. Pranked!

She chased that guy all over the shop, trying to hit any part of him she could reach. She was shaking and pale, from the fear and anger. I have an idea... stop smoking pot and all that stress will go away, like magic!

Both the company I work for and the hospital I work at require a drug test, but there was like a 1 minute window when I got hired that it wasn't required. Comes up everytime there's an audit of personnel files. I keep volunteering, but have not been taken up on it.

Imp- On a more serious note. I have known people (years ago) who thought it was funny to mess with govt testing, subbing various other liquids for the sample. I try to not think of this when I fly.

The Constitution guarantees our freedoms. That includes my freedom to drink and do drugs should I choose. It also includes an employer's freedom to decide who will and will not work for them. If I were an employer, especially an employer whose company does things that can maim or kill people, I would make EVERYONE take random drug test/alcohol tests. A person's right to toke up or imbibe ends when it hurts other people. Just like driving drunk is illegal, working drunk or high should be illegal.

When I was in high school my mother worked as a nurse. She was a GREAT nurse and had been one for 25 years or so at that point. One day they were getting ready to transfer a very large person from a gurney to a bed. To do that four people grabbed the sheet and lifted the man over. The idiot ambulance worker who was opposite my mom was drunk and loopy. He yanked on that sheet and drug the patient off the bed and my mother across it. She ripped all sorts of things in her back in the process. The drunk guy was fine. The patient ended up being no worse for wear. My mother was ruined. She hasn't been the same since and this has been over 20 years. For years she couldn't even ride sitting in a car seat. She traveled to doctors and physical therapists laying flat in the back seat. For at least a year she was bedridden. To this day she cannot sit or stand or ride for any length of time without being in pain. Decades of unending pain because some jerk felt it was his right to drink whenever he wanted. Her nursing career ended at that point and she never was able to go back to a job that she loved. He walked away scot free (well, slapped on the wrist, but that's it).

Business owners have every right to decide how they will run their business. You have the right to decide if you want to work for them or not. That's it. If you will not work for them and can't find another job, you DO NOT have to right to go on the public dole and you do not have the right to whine about it. Mom, in all her years of suffering, never took public money. Instead she figured out another job that she could do, went back to school, got her masters and started all over. All because some yahoo felt he had the right to drink when he wanted to, no matter the consequences to anyone else.

IF when you apply for the job you are told that drug tests are a requirement then you accepted the fact when you accepted the job. Don't whine after the fact.

Now, if the employer tried to be sneaky and not tell you, then dumped it on you later... then yeah I'd be annoyed.

Just like if you accept this wage when you accept the job, don't gripe about it later. But, if you start at this wage, and then out of the blue the company decides to cut your pay with no notice/reason, that's wrong.

If you don't like the wage offered, or the drug testing, or the color of paint in the building, whatever... then don't take the freakin' job.

If you want an employee who is drug free, honest and hardworking then be honest and up front wit them.

What's so bloody hard about being honest and living up to your word is beyond me... on employer or employee's parts.

Edit... City, you said it!!!

Yup..you are exactly right..
And i'll go one step further.. if your on public assistence/welfare/unemployment..you should have to be drug tested too.
"If you want your check...go pee in that cup, sir"
If i needed welfare or unemployment i would have NO problem peeing in a cup..

I'm sorry your mom and your family had to endure the stupidity of others exercising their *freedom*. She is to be commended for refusing to be a victim.

As my American Govt teacher always drilled into us, "my right to swing my fist stops at the tip of your nose", and "by and large, most people are idiots".

We just had an add it the paper last week, local company is looking to hire 15 people. Starting pay $10, higher with experience. Up to $15 per in the first year for sheet metal work. They even have people to train you in how to do the work. They can't get any one to apply because they can't pass the pee test!

School system they check you at time of hire and do background check. They got nervous when I gave them my FBI finger prints, lol. I worked for a multi-state program that worked with juvenile offenders, so yeah I'm in the FBI data base. School system "supposedly" does random checks. I haven't seen it done in 17 years. I do know that if you are suspected of being under the influence, you are driven to the testing site by a supervisor and tested. Refuse-you loose!

Ready for people to scream????

I think everyone collecting a government check, be it welfare, SSi, whatever should have to take a monthly test. You fail the first one. You have another one done right away, fail again, Boom no more $-Cha-ching-$
