D'uccle Thread

Oh sure they follow me around half the day then scatter when I try to take a picture lol. Must be camera shy

i am currently hatching only d'uccles since ALL my silkies went broody at the same time. i am getting odd colours I didn't expect. mostly I am getting black since I planned for that, but I am also getting splash, mottled, blue mottled, blue and white-and by splash i dont mean splash in the black pattern of the millie fleur (aka golden neck) i mean a white chick with random (usually on head for some reason) black spots, the older ones have partial black sectionss developing on their feathers. the white looks different than the splash in its base colour because it is more the normal white chicken yellow than the uber white base that is on the splashes.

what gets me is in my 'pattern pen' i have hens that are millie fleur, blue mille fleur, and golden necks covered by a lavender, a black mottled and a porcelain rooster-so most should have some pattern unless they are covered by the lavender-where they would be solid black or blue--yet i got a pale yellowish chick from this! all the golden necks are my own breeding, so where did this colour come from??? unless i mismarked the egg (marked D!), which i am usually careful of, i got no idea.

many look extremely poofy faced so i hope they keep full beards and muffs into their adulthood. they also have really good fuzzy feet which i have been mixing breeding to try to promote.

Forgive the mess as they are in pretty bad shape. Very severe scaly leg mites. Boy what a shocking improvement since yesterday's treatment. Their owner was moving out of state and I offered to take them in. I had no idea the work ahead of us.
I placed cardboard in the cage as I knew the cage had to hurt their poor feet and with all the goop I've put on their feet I know any bedding would just be stuck all over them.

I plan on treatment again tomorrow then maybe Thursday I will have them in the tub for footbaths! Sigh...They are all so beautiful..it pains me when people don't care for animals. Livestock or not. Ok..sorry I have so many emotions about this!! Rant over.

Again any nice feedback welcome..

i dont know what you are putting on their feet, but i know an easy treatment for mites on snakes is just to rub them in mineral oil, it may take multiple treatments but it usually isnt very sticky and you can put it in a pump sprayer.

Thanks. Because I brought them from an outside source and I have feathered shank breeds I was fearful to not treat but with a swift hand. That was suggested by a vet was to dip the feet in gasoline and after dry to lather in an A+D ointment and repeat on day 3. I chose to only do that once and continued with the ointment then did a foot soak day 4 to help be able to remove the concrete like build up that had accumulated on them.
Here's a pic of some of them. The build up was approx inches thick in most places encasing entire toes..etc. what a sad thing to see!

They are thanks! I let their feet soak today and was able to get almost all the crud off. Some of them lost skin with it but I spent about 4 hours working on them
I'm glad to hear they're doing a little better, their poor little feet! Those photos make me so sad. They really are lucky to have someone looking after them now.

I hope no one minds if I share some photos. I've had the little ones 2 weeks now, and guess that they're probably 3 weeks.

Little Frankie is my favorite, I'm really hoping she's a pullet. She's smaller than the others, but was in the worst shape when I got them so I'm not sure if she was just a bit stunted. Maybe she was even slightly younger, I don't know. She has the least obvious comb (which could be from being younger or stunted) and is the friendliest. As soon as she sees me she wants to fly up to my shoulder.

Fitzwilliam has recently become more friendly and also likes to hop up on my shoulder.

George is the most skittish, hates to be picked up.

Neville is the one I have suspected of being a cockerel from the beginning. He is just so observant. You can see his personality in the last one, so suspicious of me.

Frankie is the only one who seems to have poofy cheeks and chin. They're all very nice little chicks, although so flighty compared to my large fowl!
