D'uccle Thread

Chickens are very sensitive when they molt so your hen may want to be away by herself for a little while. My girls get a bit flighty when they molt and don't really like to be handled. They usually finish up very quickly though (in just a couple of weeks) and than are back to normal.
Your welcome. :)
I'm sad ! My baby is just perched on her roost. It's almost like she's broody but instead on the perch. She's not talking to me as much. She's skittish !! Just wants to stay in the coop. She even denied free ranging a few days. When ever we would shave our dog. She would hide under the table for about a week. I always wondered if she was imbarrerssed ? I wonder if Mille hurts or is not liking that her beautiful feathers are gone ? I miss her!

If she's moulting it could just be that. Sometimes when my girls moult they become a little skittish and don't really want to be bothered much. Also if you have any roosters she may be trying to avoid him during her moult. Or could she possibly be getting bullied by someone? Hopefully she's back to normal soon.

I agree.. Do you have a rooster? chickens are very sensitive when they are molting so it's possible that your hen may be trying to avoid him, and your other birds, and just want to keep to yourself. As long as she is healthy, and in good condition, I would just keep an eye on her. Hopefully she will be back to normal as soon as she is finished. :)

It's been awhile since I have made a post here! Anyways, my Mille is by far the best hen I've ever had! I just lost my second best along with 3 others to a pit bull. Hopped my fence and went to town in 5 minutes . Talk about a devictating day!! I don't know how he got my two top hens?! They were smart. Now I'm babbling. Sorry!!
So, I went to my bantams coop to get my baby yesterday. There were feathers everywhere !!!!! I figured she had started a molt. Well I went back two more times. More feathers everywhere blowing in yard in coop.... So now I'm really worried. I picked her up very gentle. Knowing she's been staying on her roost and I may hurt her little body. So, I started feeding her protein, starter food. Basically anything I think will help her.
Then today same thing. Now it is flight feathers feet feathers eac..... She has no mites, worms or parasites that I can find.
I guess my question is. Is it common for this breed to molt hard and fast? I have other hens molting but nothing like this. I could make a pillow.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated! As I love all my girls. She's just a bit special ! I want her to be ok.
She did try to go broody a week ago and I broke her.
Sorry for the long post!
Thank you in advance! I lost most of my pictures but here she is.

Some chickens tend to molt very fast, which can put a lot of stress on the bird. But, she should be fine :)

My two porcelain girls.

Their beards are becoming more noticible. I hope they get decent beards, but I'm not expecting too much being that they are hatchery stock. They sure are friendly and a joy to have around! Love photographing them. I need to get a good camera... maybe santa will be good to me this year lol.

So cute! They look just like mine.

They are adorable, my favorite chickens are my three porcelain d'uccle roosters, mine are getting so old, yours are so young and fresh looking.

Seven going on eight, I seem to lose most of my LF roosters quite young at 2-4 years old, but my Bantam roosters are living longer, I suspect it's from them not getting layer feed year round but grower for half the year because of chicks.

Not the best picture, they are molting and miserable, they have lost points off their combs during a few harsh winters, but they are still feisty and comical with their clown shoe shuffle and their constant crowing. They were banned from the bantam pen a few years ago for being pains and now live in the LF shed, they move out of the way of the big roosters but I swear I see them pretend to go after them when their back are turned. I really like my Bantam chickens.

@BantamFan4Life Thankies!

@oldhenlikesdogs Thank you! Yep they're still pretty young. 5 and a half months old. I was hoping for eggs from them this year, but someone told me they won't lay till they're at least 8 months or so. I won't hold my breath lol. Going to get a few more, hopefully nicer quality in the spring. I've fallen in love with them
