D'uccle Thread

I second that with the babies varying by hatch, I have noticed the exact same thing...sure there are several factors that play in to that, like environmental conditions during the 21 days in the egg and of course which rooster mated with which hen, but its just like with people, not all their offspring are going to look alike. And speaking of chick therapy, its relaxing to lay down on the floor with chicks and let them peck all around you, something about that I think is just great to do, especially after a long day!

LOL I dunno about being on the floor, I'd be covered in poop! LOL 6 pips this morning and 1 hatch. Genetics are amazing, I think of twins and other multiple births, they can look as night and day or identical.

Well, this thread has been a bit less active what with all of us watching our new baby chicks

Day 14 for my eggs in the incubator is coming up on tuesday. Out of my 23 eggs I set, I had one nonfertile, and 1 quitter, so am left with 21 eggs due to hatch March 22nd. I had a panic yesterday morning when I'd opened up the cabinet and the thermometer read 106!

I'd covered one of the vent holes the night before because the basement was chilly and the temperature had dipped. I noticed the thermometer probe had slipped a bit so was closer to the 'heater' so I hope that was the case and not that my chicks will be adversely afffected. I'll candle again on Saturday when I take them off the egg turner just to make sure. Time for me to go back to bed. My son had woke me up, and after I helped him, I remembered I'd left the coop window open-- not realizing it was going to SNOW. So at 1 a.m. in my pajamas I put on my boots and go to the coop, shut the window, grab a towel that I keep in there, and dry off my Jersey Giant rooster who is closest to the window. He usually does great in the cold, but I didn't like the idea of wet feathers! On a funny note, my favorite most sweetest d'uccle hen, decided to jump up on this board we were painting with green barn paint to get some attention. She now has green feet, as that oil based paint does not wash out easy. I was dismayed to see my hens eating the paint that had dripped on the ground, and shooing them away did not work. I hope I don't have any dead chickens tomorrow from paint poisoning. Some of them now have green beaks. And of course tonight it decides to rain and snow, so I wonder if the paint is even going to set. I KNEW we should have done it yesterday! Did I mention that we were painting my little 3x4 ft coop that I made to be a 'grower coop? Good night all!

Hello everybody - I have D'Uccle chickens and they are one of my favorites. I have a friend who hatched some eggs from me and got a very unusual color bird. This is definately a D'Uccle but it is black and gold. Very pretty bird, but I've never had one like it before. I know I found a color chart here once that showed pictures of the birds and what the colors were called. My computer crashed and I lost my saved links. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and can you tell me where to find that chart again. Thanks!

Can you post a picture of this bird?
I don't know what chart you're referring to, but feathersite has a lot of d'Uccle photos: http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGK/Millies/BRKMilleFleur.html

Good
luck to everyone who is hatching right now!!!

I may've gotten my first millie egg yesterday. Not sure, since it's a gal who's in with the broody silkies.... But the TX millies were making nests as if they were thinking about laying me some eggs

They were scoping out the floor, of course. Not the nice nest boxes that they used last fall

I was sick all weekend, so of course it was gorgeous weather

I did get the new brooders installed (with DH's help, of course!) so now all the current chicks have more room to play. The littler ones were very uncertain at first, but by yesterday afternoon were launching themselves around the new space and flying their little hearts out. Now I need some movable roosts for the little darlings.

Got my first d'uccles! Hatched out at least 4 porcelain d'uccles out of 6 eggs. Might have been 5 out of 6--broody hen won't let me look to see how many eggs she has left.

I thought the adult chickens were pretty, but these babies... they're just awesome!

No crowing from Beau yet. He, JoBeth and Lizzie are 13 weeks old now. I need to get some new pictures of them. I noticed a white feather, or partially white, in Beau's foot feathering-is that common or a fault?

Got pics! I think Beau has a pretty good comb or am I off base?

Miss Lizzie figured out how to eat without being hassled by anyone. I thought she did this by accident the other day, but nope, she is flying in there on purpose, LOL.

Totally white is a problem. Partial is normal.
Yes, Beau has a nice comb!!!
And millies are smart birds. They will ALWAYS find the best way to get the treats....
BTW, JoBeth is still my favorite

I have a teen pen with 7 'kids' in it. Only one is a pullet

The pen with the 14 'toddlers' in it has at least 4 so far with at least 4 more probable.

What happened to 50/50? Did my birds not get that message???

On a good note, I have a new pair of SQ whites in the works
