D'uccle Thread

Why are there no pics of brown/red d'Uccles on feathersite?

Why can I find no pics of gray d'Uccles anywhere?

And why must my birds hatch 75% male, 25% female? Is it because I want the girls so badly?
I though there was supposed to at least be a 50/50 thing.... Are my hens trying to tell me something????

Also, yeserday, as I rushed to tend my birds before going to a rehearsal I realized the disadvantage to having birds that love attention: They ignore me when I say, "No, we can't go out and play right now," and rush right over me. No fear at all, and no respect! And then they stayed just out of reach while giving me coy cute looks that said, "C'mon Mom, you know you wanna let us go play!" I had to break little feathered hearts.
GC's boys were the worst, because when I picked them up to put them 'away' they leaned in on me for a cuddle. So, I cuddled.

There is no 'rushing' the chicken chores when everyone wants a moment of your time....

Cant wait to see your Citron babies, keep us posted.

WGC, yeah, I'd say you really were lucky the fox decided to leave peacefully, and on an empty tummy! My bad on eggies...I thought CP had some of yours as well.
WOW, he's a pretty bird!

He's Ronnie's brown-red. He was gorgeous!

I'm glad the fox made me aware of him in a peaceful manner. It was a good reminder to keep a close eye on my peeps. I'm glad we built our runs as solidly as our coop. We have a Fort Knox set up as long as the runs are closed tight and padlocked.... And I will be much more diligant about that in the future!! There have been a couple of times when I left the bachelor open in the evening to the guys could get a little free time and then put themselves away. I have been quite lucky!!

I have only shipped one set of eggs this year, and those were to a small child. They were from the project pen since no millie eggs were available.
Now that I'm finally getting a few millie eggs a day I have been setting them. I promised a few folks I'd bring chicks to the Cocke County show on May 7th. This weekend will be my last chance to set any in time for a May 6th hatch...

Beau is mating both Lizzie and JoBeth, to their disgust and dismay. If he gets brave and grabs hold of my banty Cochin terror, Shadow, he may find himself upside down and sideways, LOL. She may just beat him to a pulp-That girl don't take no guff from nobody!

I had to chase down Lizzie yesterday. As I was putting them in for the night, the gate blew open and out she went. We went on a merry chase all over the yard. When she got near big Suede's pen, he was running up and down, trying to dance and flirt at a girl who is not bigger than his foot! She'd go up in the air if I got too close and I was about to see if I could find a net when I caught her in a corner. She screamed and squatted in my hands as I picked her up. I wasn't expecting her to lay anytime soon, though, since she's only about 16 weeks old, but being hatchery stock, could laying age for her be close?

A few of my hens started laying pretty early.

The hatchery lavs I had started pretty early as well, and layed more dependably than the heritage birds. I'm hoping some of that vigor is in the new lavenders!!

Isn't this a pretty sight?

Carolyn, your yellow chicks may look like this when they get bigger:

But hopefully not flanked by pasty white first-shorts-day-of-spring kind of knees....

Yes it is an adorable MESS of babies! And that's only 23 of almost 100. But I'll be keeping most of that 23, I think....

Those winter whites were almost hot pink by the time I got done gardening and letting the babies play outside. We had a lovely weekend, and I am soooo glad the rain waited until last night! By the end of the weekend I had a really nice spring sunburn. Already fading and I am sooo ready for more sun!!

Lori, I posted some pics on my FB page of our first GN d'Uccle we hatched in January. Did you get a chance to look at them?
